Fall 2018 Coalition Application, UMD

Ok, so I thought it might be helpful to start a thread about UMD applications for Fall 2018.

My DD filled out and submitted the Coalition app. Very exciting, as UMD is probably her first choice.

Once thing we noticed is that her SAT scores, which were ordered sent to UMD when she took the tests, did not show up at first. We called, Admissions said there is sometimes a delay, but they confirmed that they could see them.

The scores are now showing up in the Coalition portal, but they show a date of March 1, 2017. She actually took the SAT in March, June, and August. Hopefully they still seeing them all.

We also find it disconcerting that we have received an email confirmation or anything from UMD.

@Astro77 - Did you send the scores after the August SAT? Perhaps you should call again to verify that they have all the scores As far as I know, UMD does not send out emails confirming receipt of application material. 4 years ago, when my D was applying to colleges, none of them sent confirmation emails. They all left it up to the student to make sure that everything was sent.

We did call before the SATs were listed, and they said they could see all three. But on the Coalition portal, they just show Received, with a March date. They don’t list the scores, so it’s hard to be confident.

They could save themselves some calls if the portal was more specific.

We’ll probably wait a few days and do one more call.

@Astro77 - Now that I think about it, I distinctly remember seeing the actual dates of my D’s SAT scores on the UMD portal 4 years ago. But that was when UMD had its own application and portal. What you are experiencing may be a “feature” of the Coalition App portal and not something that UMD can control.

Yes, it is weird to just see a date listed, that is before she even took the SAT the first time

I think maybe they are only showing the earliest date when the test was taken? My DD only took the SAT once, but what shows is that test date (Jan 2017). I’m pretty sure UMCP requires you to submit all SAT scores…you can’t use score choice, so maybe it just shows the first time the test was taken in the Coalition App.

Does anyone know when UMD starts sending out decisions?

The UMD application deadlines page says by February 1.

https://www.admissions.umd.edu/apply/application-deadlines

Last year’s decisions were released on January 27.

My D18 also sent 2 scores - Nov 2016 and March 2017 but the score date shows Nov 1, 2016 (which is not even the actual SAT date). Very frustrating…
January 27 even for early applicants? That is so late. Most EA/ED decisions are out in December.

@Pri930 EA/ED applications are different than Maryland’s priority decision. Maryland’s priority does NOT involve a commitment to the school nor does it restrict applications elsewhere. I know it’s a tough wait, especially in light of other schools’ announcements in the first week of December, but it’s still earlier than the regular deadline applications and is the ONLY way to be considered for special programs such as Honors College, College Park Scholars, CIVICUS, etc. Applying by priority date is also the only way to be eligible for merit awards (which are mailed out a few months after admissions decisions and are different than financial aid awards). So, I highly recommend everyone get their applications in by the Nov 1st deadline…

Thank you @maryversity .

Does anyone happen to know if teacher recommendation letters that are submitted after the UMD portal shows the application as completed will still be accepted? Our DS has a complete date of 10-10-2017, then of course one of her teachers finally uploaded his letter a few days after that date. It doesn’t show when I check the Coalition app, even though the Priority deadline isn’t until 11/1. I’m hoping the letter will still be considered, even though it arrived after all of the required materials had been logged into the system.

@lifegarding My application complete date was 10/21 and one of my teacher recs which arrived after that date IS showing under Academic Recommendation Received on 10/24. So in my case, yes, the letter was added to the file after the complete date.

Thanks @Junior3 , we will try to check again with the HS and UMCP to see if it was transmitted yet.

It turns out the school had the 2 missing LOR in a holding pattern at the HS (the teachers had submitted them a few weeks ago), and the GC just submitted both of them yesterday based on the Naviance system. Fortunately, they now appear on her UMD Coalition application checklist, along with a second copy of her transcript that the the GC must have resent. In any case, all materials are in and the application is complete, so that’s a relief!

Astro77 everything you said applied EXACTLY to us. The singular difference was my daughter had 3 ACT scores instead of SAT scores. Maryland was the only school that did not send an email confirming the application was received, Maryland was the only school that uses Coalition as its admission portal instead of a separate school portal once the application is filed and Maryland was the only school that only lists the first ACT score my daughter took by month, without listing a score or the subsequent dates taken. And like you we contacted Admissions and they confirmed they have all necessary documents including the 3 ACT scores. The school apparently used this portal https://app.applyyourself.com/AYApplicantLogin/fl_ApplicantLogin.asp?id=umd but as it states Maryland is no longer using it but is using Coalition as its portal. A little unusual but it worked out.

@TerpDad888 yes their new system of just using the Coalition app is causing frayed nerves, but hopefully everything is there. My DD’s application now says complete so we are happy.

Love your name

My D applied to UMD this evening. What is the next step? How do we get access to coalition portal? Her school sends transcripts and recommendations only through Naviance. Is this ok? Please somebody respond.

It’s great your DD got her application submitted! My DD’s school also uses Naviance. Look in Naviance to see if you can request transcript and LORs sent, also email counselor. Also use Naviance to track sending of transcript, etc.

We found there was a lag between submitting application and the items being shown on the portal.

I don’t believe UMD uses its own portal anymore. We just look at the Coalition portal UMD section. It finally says “Complete” (all the parts are there) but it took days. For example, it didn’t show SAT scores even though we had them sent in September, but we called and they said they were there. Then they popped up on the Coalition portal a few days later.

I think as long as you got your app submitted, and sent SAT scores, everything else can sync up. Check with your counselor, and you can call UMD.

Good luck!!! UMD is DD’s #1 choice. We are in-state.

Our DD also applied through the Coalition app, which is the only way she could apply to UMD. If you go back into it after it’s complete, there’s a choice for application checklist - that acts like a portal to let you see which materials have arrived. Our school uses Naviance, and within a few days of them showing an item was sent along, it would show up in the application checklist section. As soon as the required pieces were in, a few days later the portal showed the application was complete. It still allowed for additional pieces, like optional LORs. Good luck to everyone who’s applied! We are in-state and it’s DD’s first choice, too.
