Fall/Spring internships

Hello, I am in dire need of an internship and am wondering if anyone here knows of any major companies which offer Fall/Spring internships ... I know Google does but that is a long shot in my case.

( i am a CS major )

So, anyone here done a Fall internship before? it seems like the majority of internships are held during the summer ... I am guessing so interns don't have to be paid as much.

They are usually referred to as coops and companies actually prefer that students do a full semester over doing a summer because it gives them more time to recoup their investments in students. Students usually prefer summer internships because it keeps them on their schedule in graduating in four years.

I’ve seen postings for IBM in the Boston area looking for coops. I think that I saw some posted for this past spring and maybe this fall. They’re also doing traditional summer internships.

Have you seen any opportunities from your career center for this summer or the spring or fall?

“They are usually referred to as coops and companies actually prefer that students do a full semester over doing a summer because it gives them more time to recoup their investments in students.”

Can you reword this? I’m not sure what you’re saying. Are you saying that companies prefer to hire interns for fall/winter instead of summer?

I’m going to ask a similar question so I’m appending it to this thread…

If I would have 14 useful credits I could take in a summer, and would otherwise aim for 18 credits in the fall or winter, would it be a good idea to take an internship in the fall or winter? Would I face less competition/be more likely to get a good internship, or should I just do it in the summer like everyone else and take what I get?

Companies do prefer to hire you for co-ops which are in the fall or spring. This is because they get an employee for a longer period than in the summer, which from a business perspective is best when taking on an investment like a student. From experience, I’ve found that applying for co-ops is a very good idea as you will face less competition than applying in the summer. It also seems like once you are “in” with a company, they will be very willing to re-hire you for returning internships/co-ops (as they’ve probably already invested a significant amount of money in you).

A good example is my experience. I worked a co-op last fall for ~4 months. Gained great experience, made great money (near to that of a full-time engineer), and got in with a top company in my field. While there, I lined up an internship with the same company in a different division for this summer… so I’ll be returning to that company in a week or so. I may have delayed my graduation by a semester, but in this economy, getting “in” with a company of this prestige is more important. I only know a few people from my school that have gotten similar internship offers this summer, while I had my offer signed off for by last December!
