Special Circumstances
I was diagnosed with clinical depression at the beginning of my junior year in high school from a combination of stress and the death of an extremely close family member. After countless prescriptions of Xanax failed, my condition only got worse as time went on, leading to a severe drop in academic performance (had straight As until mental downward spiral). However, my most recent trip to Africa showed me how privileged I was to be living my kind of life and made this condition a non-issue. Presently, I am back on track academically and am more mentally stable than I ever was.

Thanks for your input everybody.

Bump…

r u applying for aid? aid is a huge deal when it comes to transfer decisions at brown … if ur not… id say u have a decent chance of u put ur focus on ur ecs instead of just your laundry list … but you dont have a gpa yet… and those arent special circumstances… everyone has issues colleges really dont care that you saw that you were very privileged …your hs gpa is very low… i wood suggest if you want a real shot at brown you should wait another year get a 3.8 + gpa at florida and transfer as a junior…

I mean no offense but your special circumstance is hard to believe. You were diagnosed with depression? Weren’t we all depressed taking every AP/Honors course possible, working and trying to fit in ECs we loved? Then miraculously you went to Africa and cured your depression by seeing how fortunate you were. wow, if that isn’t a cooky-cutter made up story line, I’m not sure what is. And increasing your band membership by 200% is hard to believe unless the band happened to have an original membership somewhere between 5 to 10 people. If I were to read this application, I’d say, “hmm… this kid obviously went in wanting to transfer so he joined in 3874298749237 clubs and cushioned his story to get a better chance. He really didn’t care about what he was doing, just where it got him.” Again, I mean no offense, just saying how I see it.

Dude, you don’t even have your first semester, or second semester GPA. For all you know, you could bomb one of your finals and end up with a sub 3.7.

I assume you applied and were rejected in HS. (or just knew you wouldn’t get in?) Coming from a state school, you will have to (again) convince Brown you really know why you are applying, how you would fit, what you bring to Brown etc. And I think, due to the very small number of slots, you would have to have a serious 4.0 at UF. And likely be willing to apply as not needing aid, although they do give aid to some transfers. Meantime, do your best to like where you are!
