Fallen in love with USC... Scared.

Alright so I went to the college rep of USC and I fell in love with the school.

It's location, well roundedness, diversity, music scene, green campus, as well as great sports and active greek scene are everything I could ever ask for.

I've always considered myself a city person, but want a traditional college campus, and I think USC is this fit.

The only problem is I'm not sure about my chances. I come from a top 10 nationally ranked gifted school in FL, and have a 3.76W GPA with a steady improvement every year. I also have a 2070 (580R 740M 750W, hope to wring up CR), as well as Varsity Lax, good essays, good recs, and other various ECs.

Help me out please! I'm interested in Psychology and other Social Sciences, but still enjoy History and the arts.

We talking about southern cal or south carolina? Just wanna make sure cause your from florida.

If you could get your reading score up in the 700s. i’d say you stand a really good shot of getting in. USC loves to accept students with high sats.

From another thread I believe it’s Southern Cal.

OP, what is your UW GPA or your rank?

I’m surprised that someone would describe the University of Southern California as a “green campus”.

Maybe they’ve put in “Solatubes” in their buildings.
Wonder what they can do about airconditioning,
may be set the thermostat at 75 degrees?

Sorry to say it, but it’s never advisable to fall in love with a college unless you are guaranteed admission. By all means, pursue USC, but open your heart and mind to others as well. And don’t be so blinded by your crush that you forget to apply for a safety or two.

That makes more sense!
I think USC is one of those schools that must be visited by a prospective student before they enroll. (I’d put Columbia in that group, too!). The surrounding neighborhood is very urban, and I’ve known many students who found it a deal-breaker. My friend’s daughter, on her way to an appointment with a USC coach, refused to get out of the car.

well i mean i’m not like “in love” but its my number 1 choice…

what do you think my chance is? like 50/50 or what?

You might find it more useful to post in the USC forum, rather than under the general “college search” thread. You’ll find USC in the alphabetical listings.
The Fall 2009 USC freshman admits were a stellar bunch academically.
Their mean unweighted GPA was 3.8.
Mid 50% CR 630-730
Mid 50% Math 670-770
Mid 50% Writing 650-740
Mid 50% SAT Composite 1990-2210.
USC reports that 22% of the class are legacies and 12% are first generation college students, so if either one of those apply to you, that’s probably a boost.

“I went to the college rep…and fell in love.”

You shouldn’t be falling in love with a campus based on what a college rep tells you. Maybe you need to go to a few more college presentations or go and visit USC.

If you’re a minority it will help a lot. Bring up your scores and you have a good chance.

What’s your UW GPA and class rank?

Note to Silicon Valley Mom: Honestly? She refused to get out of the car at USC? If she’s that timid she should live at home and go to community college where her mother can go with her and hold her hand. That really sounds like a made up story. The girl or her parents are probably just trying to explain why she didn’t get accepted at USC by making up lies like this. You shouldn’t be spreading stories like this unless you know them to be true. USC is a beautiful campus that’s very safe – the area around the campus is safe. What did she think was going to happen if she got out of the car? Have you yourself ever been to USC? IF you had, you would realize how absurd this story is.

I was thinking the same thing, Rosieoney! What in the world would keep her from “getting out of the car?” You take the exit off the freeway for USC, passing gorgeous Galen Center as you come down the ramp. After stopping at the end of the off-ramp, you cross Figueroa. On the right is Galen Center’s nice-looking parking structure, on the left is the construction for the new underground transportation line. As you travel down Exposition, USC is all there is on the right. You turn right in to the beautiful campus and park in one of the many on-campus parking structures. The campus is beautiful and safe. What was it that she thought would happen??? The neighborhood a few blocks away is undeniably sketchy, but why would that keep her from getting out of the car at USC?

I agree with Rosie, it depends on where in Sillicon Valley, but it’s no worse then the area near Santa Clara Unviversity and San Jose State. Some areas in San Jose are down right scary. East Palo Alto near Stanford was just as bad but it has improved slightly. Milpitas is next to a prison(Elmwood?). The area near USC is not as posh as Beverly Hills or Westwood but it’s not a place that one should afraid to get out of the car.

Well maybe she was put off by the smog? I’ve heard bad things about that…

That’s the Claremont Colleges

A lot of good colleges are not too far from scary places.

Yale - in a bad New Haven neighborhood
Columbia - too close to Harlem and the West side story
U penn - not all brotherly love out there, campus police help
UC Berkeley - just a few miles from really bad areas in Oakland
and Richmond
USC - Downtown LA can get scary
Stanford - two miles from East Palo Alto

On the other hand, UCLA is in Westwood, near Belair, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, and Malibu - as good as it gets.
UCSD is in La Jolla near Torry Pines.
