Falsifying Resume

Hi CC!

As we all know, there are numerous safeguard in place to ensure the integrity of the college admissions process. The SAT has a myriad of security measures and official score reports must be sent. APs come shrink wrapped and GPAs/transcripts are nearly impossible to alter. Letters of recommendation can’t even be viewed and essays are checked for plagiarism.

The one pivotal factor of the admissions process that has no check is the resume. A friend of mine lied that he started up a club which never existed in the first place, while another classmate claimed he was an editor of several school publications he never even wrote for. On the clubs and teams I run, kids do no work and just put it on their resume.

I personally am very annoyed by this fact and dishonesty, which likely runs rampant throughout the country and hurts those who genuinely did work on ECs. Since there is no verification process on a resume, to what regard do they matter for admissions? Do admissions offices take them at face value? Do many kids in other schools also lie?

Be satisfied that your jerk friends’ lies did them no good. Most students over estimate the importance of ECs. Frankly, they’re not – except for applicants to the tippy top programs. And even then, the competition is so fierce that simply having ECs doesn’t get you far. Those admitted literally walk on water.
