My parents want me to help figure out where we should go this coming winter vacation. I live in California, somewhere not on the other side of the world might be easier. So far we have liked Maui and Club Med in Mexico, but we're open to new things.

Yeah, the only vacation I've ever been on is Florida since we would drive there everytime [24hrs. never again], but anyway, I have a friend who enjoys doing cruises and is actually leaving tomorrow for Bermuda, plus you really don't have to spend much time with the family and still have an awesome time. Also, the only other place I've ever been to other than Florida were Spain and Italy as part of my graduation present. The novelty of Italy was kind of lost for me after the third day but being able to experience the Spanish culture was amazing [personal choice, want to study abroad in Spain] and you can hit up some amazing beaches from what I understand, though you should watch out for those damn pitpockets  too bad though, we actually tried the whole time to get pitpocketed and they never did but oh well.

Oh man, if you want to visit Montreal you just missed out on its busiest weekend. There were three different citywide festivals going up there last week (Just for Laughs, Jamaica Fest, Corona Fest/Street Sale). I'd still suggest Montreal but I don't know if your parents would approve of the complete and utter debauchary that is Montreal's nightlife. God I love that city.

Toronto this time of year is also pretty amazing. You'll want to time your visit so you hit it during Caribana around August 3rd-5th for the street parade. Toronto is not as much of a party city as Montreal, but it's cleaner, more orderly and beats it in terms of cultural offerings in my opinion so it might be more suited for the family.

It depends on what you like to do. One person's vacation is another's bad time.

If you're into scenery or hiking or camping, it's hard to beat the west - California National Parks (Yosemite, Sequoia, Lassen) as well as Utah's (Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands - I don't know why anyone would knock Utah as a vacation destination), Arizona's Grand Canyon, Yellowstone Grand Tetons are all worthy. Further north, the Canadian rockies (Jasper NP, Banff) are very nice.

Hawaii's always nice for a more relaxed vacation. For a bit more money and about 3 more hours on the plane than Hawaii you could go to Tahiti for something different. I really liked Tahiti.

The Northeast is full of history and is worthy of visiting if you haven't been there (DC, NYC, Philly, Civil War locations, etc.).

Mexico sounds great, actually. My favortie family vacation was a European cruise, but I wouldn't recommend that for winter. St Petersburg was freezing in August, I don't even want to think how could it would be in December.

So...cruises are fun, and so is warm weather. How about a cruise to central/South America?

I live in central america, and seriously don't come down here this time of the year. Most countries here right now are in rainy season. Costa Rica ( my country) is having daily showers, which really sucks for tourists because it ruins the view of volcanoes, beaches etc. If you wan to come to central america the best time is during December ( our dry season).

I was in south america just last month and it was pretty cool, that might be a good option. Argentina was extremely cold ( some places about -20C) but amazing. If you want to hit some place latin and cool I'd say go to Argentina. Buenos aires is by far the coolest city in south america that I've been to, and the skiing at Bariloche is really good. If you have time you could go down to EL Calafate to do some tours of the glaciers. Definitely my favorite vacations..

dont go to utah, unless you enjoy being in mormon ville. everything is plain and simple and boring.. but skiing is great, to bad its not winter.
