What schools have the most famous teachers and who are they? This could be art, literature, film, politics, etc. When I say famous, I mean that many people would know who he/she is, not some math guy that is famous to other math guys.

the first school that came to mind is princeton which has cornell west, paul krugman, and toni morisson

I'll add David Foster Wallace at Pomona and Joyce Carroll Oats at Princeton

I think Professor Nash still has an office at Princeton too. The movie, A Beautiful Mind, was based on his life.

Really? Wow! Isn't he crazy?

Columbia: David Greene, the so-called "Next Einstein" of string-theory

Lol...he is not crazy...perhaps a little eccentric. Also, he has a condition--the name escapes me a the moment.

"There is a fine line between genius and insanity". The man is brilliant.

John Nash has paranoid schizophrenia. It can be controlled with medication. You can have a mental disorder and still be a contributing member of society!

As to other professors... This isn't in the US, but Stephen Hawking is on faculty at Cambridge. There are always the famous musicians... Milton Babbitt, John Corigliano, Wynton Marsalis and Itzhak Perlman are all at Juilliard, as an example.

Professors past from various universities were pretty famous... In architecture, I.M. Pei was on faculty at Harvard for a long while before he retired to devote himself to private practice. At CalTech, you've got Richard Feynman, who was on faculty 'til he died, I think. If you want someone obscurely famous, there's always Richard Smalley of Rice... he discovered (invented? produced?) carbon-60, the buckyball. =)

Those are all the ones I can think of for the time being.

Al Franken does some stuff at Harvard.

In reference to flopsy's post, the great physicist at Columbia is Brian Greene, not David Greene.

Also at Columbia is Jeffrey Sachs, named one of Time's 100 most influential people in the world. Currently there are 9 Nobel Laureate professors on staff at Columbia and 36 National Academy of Science members.

Lawrence Klein at Penn (economics)
Jeremy Siegel at Penn-Wharton (finance)
Ernesto Zedillo (former mexican president) at Yale
Madeleine Albright (former secretary of state)at Georgetown (SFS)
Jose Maria Aznar (former spanish prime minister) at Georgetown (SFS)

As a correction to my first post, jaug1 is correct that the Columbia faculty's name is Brian, not David, Greene. I need to get more sleep.

Maya Angelou at Wake Forest

UW has Leroy Hood, Charles Johnson , Jacob Lawrence until his death a couple years ago

Hood left several years ago to go into his own research business.

Jimmy Carter - Emory

nyu has israel kirzner

PAUL KRUGMAN!

He's a columnit for the NY Times and prof. at Pton

Novelist Richard Powers* -- Illinois (English/Creative Writing)

*an amazing novelist and a truly brilliant person

I believe James McPherson is still at Princeton, and still teaches basic undergrad history along with all his famous Civil War research. Eric Foner, another renowned historian and author, is at Columbia. George Kennan was at Princeton for many years before his recent death.
