Famous Smart People that went to state schools or lower level universities?

So, it is a proof that UMich is a low ranked college? I cannot believe it!

The title of the thread is State Schools or Lower Level Universities. Last I checked UMich was a state school.

Steve jobs

^ Local, I’m not sure people who know Reed would consider it a lower level college.

It’s a good motivation nonetheless :D

Colin Powell went to GWU

I picked a few from my state.
Indiana Univeristy alumni
Meg Cabot, Princess Diaries
Will Shortz, puzzle maker
Jane Pauley, broadcaster
James Watson, DNA researcher
Birch Bayh, former senator - also listed for Indiana State, so I need to double check this one)
Evan Bayh, former governor and former senator
Ernie Pyle, legendary war correspondent

Indiana State University, a school that is seen by most as one step above community college
Mike Alley, CEO, Fifth Third
Jeff Belskus, CEO, Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Willa Brown; African-American aerospace pioneer
Jill Bolte Taylor - “The Singing Scientist”, neuroanatomist, 2008 Time Magazine 100 Most Influential People

Ann Coulter went to a state agricultural college in New York.

^uhhh she went to Cornell lol

Lots of people seem to have trouble with the definition of ‘lower level’…

Er…General Colin Powell is a graduate of the City University of New York.

Sometimes being it’s just location.

San Jose State alumni include:

Ray Dolby, founder of Dolby sound systems
Gordon Moore, founder of Intel (and yes, guy who came up with Moore’s Law.)
Ed Oates, co-founder of Oracle

Also thrown in there Dian Fossey, the gorilla researcher; Peter Ueberroth, baseball commissioner and head of LA Olympics; and Amy Tan, writer of Joy Luck Club.

yep, I knew those things since I have a degree from San Jose State. There are other notable alumni, too.
I think this reflects how certain schools (private, mostly) have big advertising/promotional budgets. A school like San Jose State is less known than it “should” be.

Bernard Madoff-Freshman year at U of Alabama and then attended and graduated from Hofstra University.

OK. Strike those two schools from any list of places I’d ever consider sending my child.

Fred Rodgers (MisterRodgers), Thomas Starzl (transplants), Jonas Salk (polio vaccine), Benjamin Spock (baby development) - University of Pittsburgh

Go Pitt–And the brothers Mellon? Pitt.

Honestly — most people considered successful, prominent, rich, CEOs, nobels, etc, probably did not attend elite schools
