FAQ: Foreign Language

I have question how many years of language universities might give me for the following:

Beginning Latin in 8th I was able to skip Latin II as my Latin I class moved beyond the regular schedule and already into Latin II territory. I then finished Latin III, IV, V and AP Latin. Also I will have finished Japanese I thru IV by end of senior year. While attending a STEM Magnet HS, Japanese had always interested me, so this was my non-science fun class.

Honestly thatā€™s pretty good!

Iā€™ve been here before; sorry that Iā€™m coming back to ask another question!

Iā€™m currently taking French 2 as a 10th grader, and next year I will be attending an early college program at a local CC. Just took their placement test and got into the most advanced French course offered at the CC (it will only last for a semester). I was aware that this would be an issue, as my two years of HS French plus this semester could only really be counted by colleges as 3 years of French at best. Concerned, I ended up contacting an AO at a reach school to inquire, and they said it would be wise to explain this lack of further courses on the additional information section when I apply.

The only issue here is that I actually enjoy French beyond the level at which I enjoy other school subjects, and I could see myself studying IR eventually. It may seem contradictory that Iā€™m willingly giving up more advanced French options; however, that was one of the very few cons of enrolling in this program for me. Plus, Iā€™ve realized that HS French moves at an extremely slow pace compared to what I could be capable of, both in terms of grammar/vocabulary and incorporating the language and culture into my everyday life.

Iā€™m wondering if anyone has any input on what I could do to both continue pursuing the language and make that pursuit look serious and legitimate to a college. I have thought about self-studying for the AP or other exams, but I know that exam is very hard and a stretch for even the hardest of workers who have already taken five whole years of classroom French. Arrogance is something I want to be careful of, as I know my current standing in class does not indicate that I am capable of literally anything. It just means Iā€™m passionate and wanting to work as hard as I can in a very easy class.

That said, I believe Iā€™m willing to put a lot of work into this passion, and I want to take on the hardest challenge that wouldnā€™t sacrifice my academic performance elsewhere (and preferably wouldnā€™t feel 100% like SAT prep. Would love to find a middle ground between that and having casual conversations with other people online in French, which Iā€™m already doing).

Thank you!!

@mathmom Given my summer circumstances unfortunately not, but I am fine with that because I will be in Europe (and for a short time Paris!) and when I get back I can take advantage of the one classroom course offered at the new school. I have been researching opportunities for after that thoughā€¦ Found Keystone, but Iā€™m not sure if theyā€™re any goodā€¦?

Sorry if this has been addressed before, but S21 wants to take Spanish III this summer. His school doesnā€™t offer it in the summer, so we need to decide between taking it online somewhere like through National University Virtual High School or at the local CC. If at the CC, would he take Spanish III or Spanish II (I read somewhere on the forums that 2 years HS language = 1 year language at CC).
If he takes Spanish II, would that count as his third year of foreign language for the purposes of college admissions? Or would he have to take one more year at the CC to get to Spanish III? And would any courses taken at the CC count for credit in college, possibly?
Thanks for any help!

@itsmegina He has to take a placement test if he wants to take Spanish III. Does the CC offer Spanish III?

@NASA2014 Yes it does. Iā€™ll look at the placement test process. Thanks!

Hi:

I know your post is from a long time ago, but Iā€™m curious if what you said in your post about skipping the fourth year of language and substituting for something substantive feels right after the fact? My junior daughter is going through the same decision process right now, and weā€™d love another perspective. (We know what her school college counselor thinks!)

Thanks for any advice!

Hi ā€“ Both my sons ended up dropping Spanish senior year, the first after Span 3 (started in 9th) & the other after Span 5 (started in 7th). The oldest ended up at Cornell in the College of Agriculture & Life Science (CALS) which does not have a FL req to graduate. The other is at Davidson College -he passed out of their langauge requrement with a placement test. Based on how successful they were despite (or because of) dropping FL in senior year, my current senior has also dropped Spanish (after Span 5) in order to double up his math with AP Calc & AP Stats. I think that is more rigorous than Span 6 at this point.
