Will my sister and I be able to use our mother's tax info for the FASFA? Our father doesn't speak to us (divorce)

Not for FAFSA. The first criterion is which parent do you live with. If it’s impossible to determine that (say a student has an absolute 50/50 living situation), then it goes to which parent provides more than half of the student’s support. But first, it’s who you live with.

If you apply to schools that also require the CSS Profile then you’d run into an expectation that your father report his income and assets, but not for FAFSA.

So I wouldn’t need to list his info? Just my mom’s tax info?

Yes, just your mom’s. As far as FAFSA is concerned, Dad doesn’t exist.

You only supply your custodial parent’s information on FAFSA, so that would be your mother. It doesn’t matter whose taxes you and your siblings are filed on.

I’d be concerned that the IRS will catch up to your mother for listing all 3 children on her tax return at the same time that your father is listing 2. Legally, a dependent can only be associated with one parent’s tax return. It’s not uncommon for divorce terms to specify which parent will claim which child. Your mother would only need to claim one child on her return (rather than all 3) in order to file as Head of Household.

LOL Good.

Vballmom, thanks for the info. I’m not quite sure how the whole taxes thing goes lol
