Hello, i’m an international student currently accepted for Pratt Institute and FIT.
(hadn’t receive any merit-based scholarship from Pratt)
and my ultimate goal is to get a jot after graduation and start my own fashion brand in USA.
Speaking of tuition, Pratt is $49,000 and FIT is $15,000 average per year.
I’m leaning torward to pratt because they offer more artsy classes and brand-making opportunity(senior fashion show). However i’m concerning that high tuition is worthy…
In FIT, every student must choose one specific major in junior(children wear/sportswear/knitwear/intimate/special costume)
which i dont like very much. i think it confines student’s design area but in a good way, they can focus on their major part.
please comment anything you know, I NEED ADVICES!! Thank you so much.
@orcenurse, Over four years, the difference in tuition is over $100K. Unless you’re very wealthy, that should give you your answer right there. FIT offers extraordinarily strong connections to the fashion industry, in New York and in other parts of the country. It may not be as prestigious and elevated in design as Pratt in the arts, but it certainly provides internship and job opportunities and connects its students to industry professionals and retailers and apparel firms throughout the industry.
I wouldn’t worry about the major classifications. Sportswear is a wide category that can encompass just about anything you’d want to design. Intimates and knitwear are technically specialized sub-categories. If you want to learn more about them, I believe elective courses would be available.
Working in America after graduation is not so easy for internationals. Research this aspect of your plan thoroughly before you make a commitment.
I am not sure how much difference in job opportunities for graduates from either school. Both are excellent fashion schools. Pratt is in a horrible neighborhood in Brooklyn and FIT is in the middle of glamorous midtown fashion district. I’d go with the cheaper FIT. Anyway, one of the graduates from Pratt did not go into fashion, she is now a top real estate developer, I guess build a house is like to make a dress :).
I’m guessing if you’re an international student that cost likely doesn’t matter so much? FIT is cheaper, yes, but that doesn’t include housing, which in NYC can easily be another $25-30K a year.
Have you had a chance to visit both? Both have great reputations…you probably need to go to accepted students day at both so you can look more closely at the differences of each program.
THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS!
i know i have to care about getting a job as an international student since it is never easy. but my ultimate goal is to run my own brand - so i’ve committed to Pratt, which seems more fit too me. (of course not the tuition lol) both school have great reputations and they will offer me great internships i bet…! Pratt’s fashion design program is growing very fast and i love the school’s artsy vibe. I wish i had a chance to visit both but i can’t :(( anyway, thank you all! it helped me a lot.
