My daughter would like to apply to this program. She will be starting her junior year of Highschool. She took a workshop in fashion design this past summer at FIT and 2 classes at Scad. That is it. She doesn’t know how to sew. What does she need to do for a portfolio?? She thought about applying to fbm program first and then switching to fashion design once she gets there. Is that even possible? That way she has more time to learn to sew. Her grades and SAT and extracurricular are strong. Her Highschool offers nothing related to fashion design. Can somebody advise her on what to do or what she needs to be accepted. Thanks
I would see if she can work with someone to get her portfolio together. A lot of time in the summer programs, the teachers will help the students get their portfolio together. I would just have her ask them exactly what she needs. Maybe even contact admissions office or academic advisement (although im not positive if they will serve those that aren’t students) And yes she can transfer once she gets into the school either right away or you can switch after two years (once you get an associates degree) Other then that I would suggest for her to try to get sewing lessons someone, although they will prob teach you the basics once you get into FIT, but it’s always good to know beforehand. Other advice I have to get into FIT besides have a strong portfolio is having a strong essay. Don;t have the essay be like a biography about yourself, have it be more like a story either about how she feel in love with fashion or design, or describe a time that struck up this passion inside of you whether from the past or present. They love seeing essays like this. Also I would have all of this prepared well ahead of time before you are actually able to apply to the school. Since so many student apply, sometimes admittance is first come first serve, so have your application in ASAP.
Good luck to her!
Thank you @fitmom495. Does your child go there?
No, I actually go there. (using my moms account) So i’ve been through the application process and thankfully I made it in with no problem, though my major didnt require a portfolio. I’ve also had two other family member that have been through the application process as well so i’ve seen it all!
Like I said, have her portfolio together, have a great essay, and get everything in the second you can! The sooner the better!
