I want to apply for Fashion Design and want to ask you some questions. I am taking sewing classes in NY but I'm a beginner and expect to finish the program with intermediate skills. The website says that I should bring photos of garments that I made showing creativity and sewing ability. For someone like me with an expected intermediate level of sewing, I am thinking of the possibility of creating simple garments with minor creative alterations but nothing glamorous or hi-end. So my question is what are my chances of getting accepted or do they even consider beginners like me? I also read somewhere else that I should bring swatches of fabrics to an interview. Can you give me more information about that? Any advice for sketches?
For my last set of questions, I'm taking liberal arts courses in college and hope to transfer to FIT's one year AAS program. The 2nd semester of that program is packed with 16 classes and I want to maintain a part-time job. Is it possible to move perhaps the electives to the 1st semester and alleviate the workload? How intense is it? I'm willing to work hard, I just don't want to get in over my head. That must be draining, sorry about that. Hope to hear from you. Thanks.

i applied as a freshmen to the 2 year AAS fasion design and got in, even though i do not have extraordinary sewing skills. im very beginner- i sewed a simple dress, skirt and a shirt- with a little bow thing at the top. that’s the most complicated i went. they just want to know that you have the basic skills down, because it is a very technical school. as long as your sketches, essay and grades are strong- you have a good chance of getting in. the fabric swatches go along with your illustrations- if i remember it was a 2in by 2 in swatch they wanted. you might want to check that. also label the type of fabric (100$ cotton or w/e) the sketches should have seams, darts, etc where they are needed. think about how one would get into the garments when you are sketching and how they would fit on a person, is it possible etc.

idk about the second part of your question, but gl with everything!

Thanx for your reply!

If the sketched they are asking from your are technical sketch rather than fashion sketches(meaning clothing drawn on fashion figures, as I’m not sure what the specific details they asked out of you) make you to dot the seam lines of top stitching and draw in dart lines and buttons and zippers and such.

As to the second part to your question. You want to put all the elective to the beginning? I’m not sure if they would allow that since it’s all a system when you’re supposed to take certain classes I might not think the counselors would let you switch their curriculum even if you were willing to work hard. But not too sure about that. GL!
