My daughter will be beginning her senior year in September. We started a list of possible colleges that have good communcation department. She really wants to be a fashion journalist for a magazine. Her first choice is SUNY Oneonta (looks like a reach). We're looking for a medium school - in the Northeast - good campus life (not commuter school). Her final junior average was 88. SAT scores were low but she is retaking them in October. Our list so far consists of: SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Cortland, Marist, York College of PA, Bloomsburg University. Any suggestions, thoughts????
Thanks,

Syracuse University is actually one of the only schools I can think of that has a fashion related journalism major.
Internship/related work experience will be more significant in actually getting in the doors of some of these fashion magazine companies than simply concentrating on a specific major or department. Conde Nast has summer internships that one can apply to every year from their website. Google “Ed2010” and this website will also list internship opportunities in journalism. Many fashion magazines post on there.
The most important thing for anything related to industries like Fashion and trying to break into it, is location location location. Being in a major city, or simply having access to an area where there are opportunities for your daughter to build up her resume, be it through simple retail part time clothing store jobs, will be necessary for showing her interest.

Thanks so much. I agree about location that’s why I’d like her to stay in new york for college - any thoughts on what SUNY schools have good communications programs?

I don’t think SUNY Oneonta would be a reach for her…I don’t know all her stats, but I think an 88 would be good enough to get in
