FAST 2018 Question(s)

Hi everyone,

The application requires a resume in order to be eligible, would anyone be willing to share theirs as an example of what type of information should be included? Thanks!

Here are some suggestions (you can look for formats online, too). You might want to look for some examples of fonts, spacing, etc. But for a typical HS student, it might have:

Your name, address, email address (ideally like a high school one, not "maddog@gmail.com) and phone number at the top.

A section labeled Education. You can list any high schools attended, current grade. You might list if you’ve taken AP courses. List any academic honors (honor roll, etc). GPA if it is strong. Have a bullet for each school if you have more than one high school.

Then have a section for Extra Curriculars. Have a bullet for each major one. I’d list the science/math related ones first, since this is for Mudd. Just a rough example:

  • FIRST Robotics - Grades 9-11. Team captain (11), also handle team lead for programmers and team marketing. Team won Rookie Inspiration Award. (9). Finalist for Dean's List Award (11).
  • Programming Club - Grades 10-11, President (11). Purpose of club is to introduce programming to students who haven't tried it before, to share information and learn new skills, and support other clubs at the high school with their computer needs. Primary languages are Python, Java, and C++.

If you have a job, I’d have a separate section called Employment (you can include self employment, like if you do some small contracts for web programming or mow lawns or wait tables or something).

Generally, programs are looking for interested and interesting students, and Mudd is no exception. Be sure to find a way to list any honors or awards or scholarships you have won in high school. You can also list summer programs – if you took something for credit, you could list it under education, or something like a camp or volunteering could go under Extra Curriculars. Usually a high school student will have a resume of one page or less, unless you are especially accomplished.

Don’t feel stressed if your resume seems a little light. That is true for most high school students! We used to call my kid’s resume “Intkid in a nutshell” when we talked about it. It was less intimidating than thinking of it as a resume.

Good luck, I hope you get accepted!

Thank you! I submitted my application yesterday, so we’ll just have to wait about two weeks to find out the news
