Hi,
My father is in prison and has been since 2006, he will be getting out next month. I filled out my finiacial aid aplication and I used him as my parent because I am living with his girlfriend and has been since he has been in jail. My efc is 0 ofcourse because he hasnt made any income and i make about 10 grand a year. I am curious as to whether my school will ask for my mothers information even though she dosent have anything to do with me anymore? Also does my current GPA have any effect on whether I will get any aid?

For the federal financial aid application (FAFSA), you only have to give info about one parent - if you're not living with either one, then you're supposed to use the one you last lived with, which sounds like it's your dad, right? Public colleges and universities only use the FAFSA application. So for the public schools, you don't need to give any info about your mom.

If you're applying to some private colleges, then they will probably require either the CSS/PROFILE application in addition to the FAFSA, or their own school form in addition to the FAFSA. In either case, they will probably want to know about your mom too - they have an extra form for that. If you don't know where your mom is or how to get info from her, you can talk to the financial aid offices at each college to ask them how to fill in that extra form.

Your GPA doesn't affect most federal aid like grants, work study, and loans. In my state, California, the GPA does matter for state grants; I don't know about other states. For college aid, it might matter.

What colleges are you applying to?

Valencia community college in orlando florida is where I'm going to go and where i guess u can say applying to. I was at broward community college in Miami fl but I want to go away to school to get away from all the destractions.

What do you mean go away...its a community college the only thing you would be doing is driving further? Remember if you go to another community college outside of you district..the price of attendance spikes

Wat do u mean the price if attendance spikes? They are about 3 hours away from each other. Im going there and its basically a feeder college right into ucf. I looked online and the fee's are he same.. Like 78$ per credit hour...

No, I am not applyng to any private colleges, I am going to apply to University Of Central Florida after I get my AA

So because you're only attending public schools, you only have to fill out the FAFSA, which means your mom's info isn't needed (assuming your dad is the last one you lived with).

I looked at the Valencia financial aid page, and it says that if you're a high school student, they determine aid just using the FAFSA info (along with how many credit hours you're signed up for). If you're already in college, they'll also look at what kind of progress you're making. I think this is confusing, so you might want to talk to them about the details. Check this page if you haven't looked at it already - it talks about all the federal grants: Financial Aid - Valencia Community College. On the left side there are pointers to info about other kinds of aid, including scholarships, loans, and work study.
