My husband lost his job 5 months ago (schools don't know this fact yet) and haven't found one yet. I don't work. So my family doesn't have income.

My son is admitted to Berkeley, Standard, Harvard, Yale, Duke and Princeton. He got some grant from one of the above schools, but not from others.

What is the best approach to appeal the financial award decisions?

Thank you very much for kindly and timely advice and suggestions.

contact the schools and explain the situation. Also you said he got some grant from one of those. That means that you may have fairly sizeable assets. The schools may re-adjust their aid based on the current situation, but if you have large assets the grants may not be large.

you need to contact the schools immediately and explain the situation. You will need to ask for a professional judgement regarding the financial aid package. The FA offices have the authority to change your EFC based on information you provide (proof will be required).

When I applied to go back to school, my husband had lost his job about 6 months earlier. Our EFC was high due to some assets and income -- but the assets were spent down while he was out of work and the income was much less (new job was less than half the original job). They required proof (lots of it) but did adjust the EFC quite a bit.
