I’ve paid my way through college entirely…Worked 40/hours a week, taken out loans, the works. If there’s a will there a way (not to be cliche).

To the original poster-

Swimcat’s advice is accurate. If he were to refile at a later date (deferring) with student residing in mother’s household and VA Tech being FAFSA only the father’s income would not be required for FAFSA only the custodial parent(s).

I would recommend posting in the financial aid forum as well, there are many knowledgeable posters who would also provide accurate and effective advice.

If mother is truly low income then he would be Pell Grant, SEOG, federal work study, subsidized loan, and SMART grant eligible along with eligibility for institutional aid.

Good luck.

Agree w/ all those who recommend deferral for a year and live w/ mom…since he’s 18 the “custody” issues should go away, next year FAFSA will consider who he lived with (mom).

Thanks again to everyone who posted and sorry for taking so long to reply.
Centh, thanks - I didn’t know about Richard Bland.
He still hasn’t decided what to do, but is determined to go to college, one way or another.
