Surely the school must get some discounts on theater tickets for their theater majors? I've never seen one that didn't. DC is fun, and Georgetown (the town) is compelling in a touristy way, too.

Rarely, if ever, do we get discount tickets. If we do then its very small amount, and has nothing to do with AU.

Honors students through the AU Honors program will get numerous opportunities throughout the year to attend performances/sporting events at discount prices (about half off, most of the time). Sometimes the Honors program will even give out some free tickets. However, I don't think the school in general gives out many free/discounted tickets to events to the general student body.

I don't know if theatre majors get any special privilege. You should contact the department about this.

My favorite thing: Being Clawed the Eagle (mascot) at the Holy Cross game.

Thanks collegemom :)
I appreciate your enthusiasm as well.

md, your attacks on collegemom are unwarranted. You've made yourself clear about your unhappiness. No need to get personal.

My point is she started this argument, and feels that she is dignified in portraying me as the culprit. I'm pointing out that this is false and all she has done is attack my point of view. The only point I've made on this website is that my point of view is as legitimate as hers. Probably more so since she doesn't even attend this school. Yet, throughout her posts, she has consistently belittled my beliefs and opinions. She should be the one on the defensive, not me.

Proud Dad~ yes! Georgetown is awesome! and it really doesn't have to cost the kids much, unless parents happen to be visiting ;) ! there lots of free things in and around the mall, and always something of interest in some public forum. and as i've said to you about your other post, and swmass has said as well, always take your questions to the folks who know, within the actual departments.

swmass~thanks and appreciation to you as well!!! :)

MD - I think the problem is that you do not have a whole lot of positive things to say about AU and whenever someone asks a question, you are the first to answer negatively. After all, no one can honestly believe that everything about AU is awful and I believe those who attend AU are tired of reading your negativity as well as newcomers who are looking for information from those who have first hand experience in the things they are asking about, not on hearsay or your assumptions. I cannot believe you are engaged in all activities and all majors. Just give it a rest and go be miserable somewhere else.

Then let me answer negatively, and you answer in your opinion. There is certainly room for disagreement, but the fact that you all are trying to shut up an opinion that is different from you all is what is troubling. Am I extremely disappointed in AU? yes. Are my two alumni parents and alumni grandfather disappointed in AU? yes. They have been so disappointed that they have stopped giving donations to AU for the first time in over 20 years. They want me to leave. I'll repeat. Alumni parents want their child to leave this university. When I looked for opinions on AU, all I got were the one-sided positives that are present on this site. I'm trying to show another side so that kids aren't blind-sided by the inefficiency of this university. For those of you who constantly complain about my opinions, here are some positives about AU:

Washington, DC
Kogod
SPA
Some of the Professors
Financial Aid

Negatives:
Administration
Costs
Administration
Greek Life
Some of the Professors
Administration
Academic Rigor
Administration

There positives and negatives for all of you! Rejoice! Rejoice!
In conclusion, my belief is that this school is not close to being worth the cost. The Uniiversity rarely ever enhances life for students. The two major construction completions this year has been a) New Day Care building for people who don't even work at AU and b) new showerheads that reduce water pressure to a trickle and which led to an uproar by the student population. Where is this $40,000+ tuition going? Unless one receives major Aid or has some sort of legacy there is no reason to justify attending this university with its cost. I am going to leave after my sophomore year at the encouragement of my alumni parents, again, alumni parents. I would recommend high-schoolers look elsewhere for their 4 years.

okay i in no means created this thread to start countless arguements. i personally am greatly intersting in this school and wanted to know some POSITIVE (note, my original post said POSITIVE) aspects/opinions of the school. im not saying that if someone has a negative opinion of the school that they shouldnt share it, i certainly am not one thats a fan of things being sugarcoated and overlooked BUT to constantly argue and have a comment back about what everyone says? there doesnt need to be any of that. this is a thread to help people choose where they want to go to college, the majority of the people reading this thread are using it to help them decide if they want to go to the school or not (except in the case of parents looking for their children) which means that these (like myself) are high school kids. believe me, we deal with enough petty drama everyday in school. we dont need to go to boards such as this for advice/personal experiences, etc. just to hear one alumni of the school (not to mention any names in particular...) say everything negative that they possibly can and just cause more internet drama amongst everyone else. its not necessary! if you dont agree with what someone else said, so what? thousands of people go to this school every year, every single one of them is bound to have their own opinion. so accept it as just that...you dont know anything about them. every one of them (including yourself) came from a different background, lived in a different dorm, majored in a different area, had different friends, took different classes, lived their life differently...all of those factors contribute to ones college experience! so, if you dont agree with what a previous poster says...then just move on. if you have an experience you would like to share that proves differently...then do so....seeing both sides of everything is great. but if all you have to say are comments to put everyone else down and act as though your own opinions and experiences are superior, then just move on.

marching~ i hope AU is fortunate enough to get you! :)

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. We need to respect everyone's opinion regardless of whether we like it or not. So nobody should tell md to just "shut up and leave."

md,
I agree with some of the negative aspects you have mentioned about AU. I think your views do reflect certain truths about AU that prospective students should know about. However, the way you have presented your opinion has been rather provocative to people who care about this school. As you have probably noticed, I'm no AU enthusiast. But some of your posts contained harsh words which even made me feel slightly offended. Please feel free to share your knowledge about AU with prospective students. They would certainly appreciate more opinions and beneficial explanations from current students such as you and I. But we should alway keep in mind that in this forum there are many posters who love and care about this school and that it is entirely possible that how we present our opinions can offend them unintentionally.

ok wait .. Ceasefire !!!

i think i read that the SIS was 'grossly overrated'.
I thought it was just the opposite. Would someone care to clarify this ?
Thanks

groenveld,

That statement regarding SIS was md's personal opinion. So take it or leave it.

good point, swmass, take it or leave it.

Hi, I was just reading through this thread, and there seems to be some confusion about the Music Department, I'm not sure if it's already been clear since I haven't read every comment, but I'm not a music major and I take instrumental lessons at AU, you need to have some experience in order to take lessons, not necessarily be a music major. Just need to schedule an appointment with the instructor to meet with you and audition for it. If you want to take lessons and not be a music major or minor, you need to be in an ensemble. However, this is for instrumental, I'm unsure about voices or anything else. Unless they changed the policy from this year, this is what I went through. I hope this clarifies some things. In addition, the school has a web site where you can further find information about applying for music programs here at AU. Feel free to leave me a message if you have any other questions.

I think you're right peggyyy, but when I asked about it earlier this year they said one had to be a music major. I think the oppotunity is available if the administration would get its act together.
