<p>Please give your comments or advise- how important is it now a days to get your FE, when one is aiming for construction management.
A lot of job profiles don't require it unless in structural. Now there are other certifications such as PMP, CMAA which is concentrated on project management,.
I finished by bachelors in 2011, have been working for a year and a half and starting my masters in construction management. I dot have an FE license. I know it helps one get their PE but into today's market in construction management what is its need? </p>
<p>How could an extra certification, which in the grand scheme of things isn’t all that difficult to get, be a bad thing?</p>
<p>Will you ever be expected (in both your first job and ones higher up the chain) to be able to sign off on an engineering document or have a competency in the the structural soundness of a project you’re part of?</p>

<p>If you work in a true construction management role, you won’t need a PE. The interesting thing that I’ve encountered is a few people have recommended that I get my PE, even though none of them could tell me how I would benefit from it other than “just to have it.”</p>
<p>Generally, I haven’t found certifications such as PMP and CMAA to be particularly important. Your ability to climb the ladder in construction management will depend almost entirely on your ability to deliver projects and not what a couple pieces of paper say (with few exceptions).</p>

Yea you right people can’t easily pin point the importance of a PE license, in my workplace the PMP license is growing, and few colleges are adding PMP course as theirs masters program.
Maybe it will take time to grow or fade out, will see.
In this field lots of variables are required to be good along with education and licenses I believe, and if u nail them then one is good.

<p>In the broad fields of Civil or Structural Engineering, I would still recommend you get it now, while it is still easy. The costs are relatively low and your career path might open up some great opportunities that require a PE license later on, when it is less convenient to get.</p>
<p>as a consulting engineering & PMCM hirer, you should definitely get your FE, and eventually your PE. Simply put, its a credential that is universally recognized in the consulting/design engineering & CM world, which could help you secure a job or be more valuable to your employer when they are competing for work based upon company qualifications. Plus, it gets increasingly more difficult to study for and pass your FE once out of school, which puts a damper on trying to secure your FE once in the working world should you later recognize its importance.</p>
<p>I repeat, GO FOR YOUR FE NOW! (Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for a PMP also, but the PE is still a covetted standard.)</p>
<p>I took a course in graduate school which utilized a textbook that focused on the PMP exam. That was the last I heard of it.</p>
<p>I agree with the other posters in the sense that a PE is extremely important if you go into the design field. If there is even a remote possibility that you will go this route, you should take the FE now because it covers many topics that you likely won’t encounter professionally.</p>
<p>Do note that there is a good possibility you won’t have the qualifying experience to sit for the PE exam if you work in construction management especially if you build buildings. there’s so much more than just steel and concrete!</p>

I will have to get it I am starting my masters in construction management in jan, along with working full time. Over the summer break will get it!!
