How does the ACT score the essay?
I got a 34 Composite score and a 33 English score. What is the highest/lowest score I can get?
When should we get them?
I thought I did pretty well on it, but now I realize that it could have been longer (2 1/2 pages?). The topic wasn't too bad though. What did you think?
Thanks everyone!

Two readers read your essay and give it a score from 1 to 6. So totally, you can get a maximum of 12 points. In terms of the highest combined English/Writing score, you can probably get 34 but that's only if you get a 12. 11 will probably get you a 33. The lowest is about 25 when you get a 2 on the essay, which is very unlikely. You should get your writing score pretty soon. I already got mine.

I thought I did bad on it compared to my previous essay, but in reality I got 10 this time compared to 9 on the previous one. I guess the reason I got saved is because I'm in a journalism class and I already knew my positions.

With an English score of 33, your score range for English/writing is 24 to 34. The table is published in the Preparing for the ACT booklet, which you can download here.

Thanks! I got my score back. I'm kind of dissapointed--I got a 9, which is a composite score of 31. That's so weird; I thought I did pretty well on that. Maybe I didn't write enough. I'm happy with my composite score but would you guys recommend me to retake it just to do better on my writing score?

A 34 is good enough to get your foot in the door anywhere. A 9 on the writing will not hurt you in any way. It will now be up to you to get the rest of your application to where you want it to be. If you really are not comfortable with that 9, though, take it again and just write BIGGER. It worked for me :).

yea i got a 34 composite and an 8 writing...i'm taking it for the 3rd time in april!

Wow the graders must be incredibly lazy to be mostly judging an essay based on the length.
