My son was admitted off the waitlist as a feb student. He has questions regarding a mid year start. He wonders whether he will miss out on the beginning of the 2014 class by entering mid stream. Also, with the semester "gap", does Midd have any organized programs
for those months? Does the freshman class all feel like a cohesive group with the fall & winter students? Wish I could go back to school!
Any feedback is appreciated.

I wouldn’t say he’s missing out, but its definitely a different experience. Whether it will be better or worse for him depends on what type of person he is, but the school tends to be pretty good at placing only students they think will succeed as febs is that group.

To be honest, febs tend to stick together, and while nearly all have some friends who are regs, I wouldn’t say they integrate. In a way, that might be better–since there are 80ish febs, they form a really tight-knit group. And febs from previous years are good at reaching out to the new class.

I actually ended up wishing I was a feb myself. It was a group of students who were less sports-focused, and generally more creative. If that sounds like something you son would enjoy, he should seriously consider it!

Oh, and I don’t think the school runs any programs for febs. But, if he needs help finding one, they could probably offer advice based on programs febs have done on their own in the past.

Here’s another thread about being a Feb.

It might be worth calling Middlebury and telling them your son is very interested in Middlebury and would REALLY like to start in the Fall semester and ask if it’s at all possible. The worst they can do is say no.

Middlebury is known for making a very good effort to welcome the Feb admits and for making it work for them.

Good luck with the decision and congratulations.

Was your son admitted through mail or a phone call? Also, when was he notified?

He was notified yesterday, Friday. May 8, by phone.

This link to Midd admissions website might be helpful: [For February Admissions | Middlebury](<a href=“February Admission | Middlebury College”>February Admission | Middlebury College)

They have a booklet with more detailed info about Feb admissions, too, and it can be accessed through the accepted students page on their website. It is a different way to start college, but Febs are very enthusiastic about the program.

Also check out the Febs discussion on the Middlebury 2014 Facebook page.

My S was admitted off the wait list as a Feb last year. He spent a semester as a non-matriculated student at a local college. PM me and I’ll tell all.
I spoke with him today and he said, quote:“Even when I’m having a kind of bad day, I think how lucky I am to be here…I never would have appreciated it so much if I had gotten right in”
He is so happy. He got all his classes, a nice roommate(also a feb) and is already very involved in campus organizations. If your S wants Midd, go for it.

Unlike some schools which, I understand, place all the Febs in a particular program overseas or elsewhere for the fall semester, Middlebury encourages Febs to devise their own plans and not to necessarily try to get college credit for the semester.
This may be a good approach because I hear that the rest of the class finds the Febs who arrive to be very interesting because they have been all over the world and/or doing creative things for the entire semester. Of course, you have to examine the cost of doing that, but there may be some relatively inexpensive options. Or there may be schools your child could attend in the fall that would be actually be less expensive than Midd (like the University of Edinburgh or other overseas options). Midd does have a pamphlet for Febs with lots of ideas in it.

This subject has come up on threads for other Top LACs. I was a feb freshman many, many years ago at Mount Holyoke College, so I am always interested in what students are saying today about being a feb freshman. The only negative comments I have ever heard are from those who were not feb freshman. I understand that a Midd feb freshman is “treated” the same as a MHC feb freshman --once you are made to feel at home and oriented to the campus there are no special distinctions. I was on campus less than a week before I felt just like everone else. All of my friends were September freshman and we remain friends today. By the time I was a sophomore nobody even remembered that I had been a feb freshman. I arrived not knowing a sole from Hawaii in the middle of the winter so that made it extra scary but I never regretted my decision to attend MHC. Today kids seem to do so many fun and exciting things for the fall semester. I attended UH because wanted to graduate with my class and did not want to worry about trying to catch up during my summers. Good luck to your S. I am sure he will love Middlebury–even as a feb.
