hello,

i'm a rising junior but i never had a clear grasp of my school's FA package, as my parents dealt with most of it. I had a $3000 "suggested subsidized federal direct loan" and $1000 for the unsubsidized direct loan on my FA estimation. this was back when my school sent me my initial FA package in may. Today, i realized i no longer had these two loans, and I was charged for the remaining tuition. I never received an email about signing an MPN in the last few months (i did it two years ago as a freshman). can anyone explain what's happened?

thanks

Did you accept the loans as part of your package?

The good news is you can call the financial aid office and request these be included. It’s not too late. Ask if you have to complete a new PMN because there was a year when you did not take a loan. They will tell you.

^^^what she said - you probably did not accept the loans. The MPN should be a one off thing unless you change schools. But you have to accept the loans every year (at least in my experience).

thanks, i don’t really recall physically doing something to accept the loans the past couple of years. are students supposed to accept it as part of the mpn or some online statement?

i got disbursement notifications in my school email, which said i could cancel the two loans by writing to them. these emails were sent to me a few weeks before each semester started, but i realized it hasn’t happened for this coming fall - anyone happen to know why?

You need to ask your school. Only they can answer your question.

Both my kids had to actively accept their loans. My daughter’s school had an online page where she could just click to accept it. My son’s school made them sign a paper acceptance. Every school is different.

Ask your school.
