We went on to the site, completed the counseling and completed the MPN. Does the college take it from there? We did not see anyrhing that asked us (except at the beginning) if we wanted to take a subsidized loan and/or an unsubsidized loan and for how much.

The college takes it from there. You will be notified which you qualify for (you don’t really get an option of Subsidized/unsub, you qualify or not based on EFC).

Thank You!

Just make sure you’ve also followed the school’s procedure for accepting aid awards - there may have been an enclosure with the offer letter you received from the college. At my D’s school there is a telephone procedure dedicated to this - that’s where the options for subs/unsub, Perkins, etc. are identified and she can accept/decline each offering. Any other modifications (ie. to take a lower amount, etc.) require a call/email to the FA office.

As part of the FA package there was a line for the subsidized federal loan of 3,500. They said if you accepted admission it was assumed you accepted the FA package as well unless you told them otherwise. We wanted to take a federal unsubsidized loan as well(2,000). I believe as part of the e-mail last week they send us regarding FA, they asked what federal loans you wanted to apply for if you were eligible. We picked both subsidized and unsubsidized so I assume they will file the paperwork for both.

Yes, you’re right - they use the “acceptance by default” method…some schools only accept gift aid on the student’s behalf and require an affirmative response on loans, if desired.
