Federal Work Study - What kind of jobs do GWU students usually get?

Hi, Part of my financial aid package is through federal work study. I'm curious what kind of jobs are available with FWS. What are the wages usually like? Are they simply minimum wage or are they usually much higher? I'm afraid of locking myself into something when I might be able to make more money at a non-FWS job. I can't check what is available yet because job postings aren't even online until 27 August.

Any input would be helpful for me making this decision. Thanks!

The highest paying FWS job ive seen is $12/hr. You can make as much as they give you so you could run through you Work Study by the end of Fall Semester but they may keep you on if they like you. The jobs for FWS are usually office type jobs in the registrars office or career center or something like that. Its better experience than working at a pizza place, you would probably want a WS job over something like that

Thanks Mazzi - You said that the highest paying job was $12/hr. Is that normal or a rarity? What is the average?

I seem to remember the library giving out $20/hr jobs to work study students. However, they had something like 200 applicants for 15 spots. I know because they lost my application and I had to watch them go through every application looking for my name.

I was awarded work-study as well, but found that working off-campus paid much more (especially at the various business and law firms in DC... I made about $14-15/hr). My roommate worked at the GW Inn for $14/hr.

There are some pretty well paying FWS jobs. This past year I had a desk job through one of the administrative offices, but even though I only got $7/hr I got to do my homework at the same time. I know there are much better paying FWS jobs, but a lot of them are off campus. My friend did reading tutoring and got paid $14/hr but had to travel pretty far to get to her job.

In the beginning of the year there is always a FWS job fair where you can find a ton of jobs too.
