Fellows essay question.

Does anyone have any tips about how to pick four people for a dinner party? I'm having a pretty tough time coming up with ideas. Who did you pick, and why?

What a stupid question. This will lend keen insight to one's future potential.

Look for humor.

Whistle Pig,

Like the OP, my own kid also had a tough time with this question but I'd stake his future potential against yours any day. At least he's not insulting. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Viaticus,

Once my S got going on this, he had a hard time limiting his essay to 800 words. It's not as tough as you think and you won't need too much dialogue. He had about 5 false starts, though, before he found 4 people that he felt comfortable writing about. Good luck!

I THINK (although I had to read the Whistle's answer several times to give him the benefit of the doubt) that he was sarcastically referring to the actual essay prompt itself, not Viaticus' question ABOUT the essay.

Help me out here, Whistle, I'm trying to get your back.

PS patsmom -- congrats on your son's epiphany! it's what, Tuesday? And my son hasn't started yet. The 10 page paper he was struggling with was originally due on Monday and he would then be able to focus on the Fellows essay all day Monday evening, today and tomorrow -- so of course his teacher extended the paper's deadline to Wednesday! I have no doubt he'll be huddled over the computer on Wednesday at 11:45 PM trying to finish up his essay :)

Ah, jeez, lderochi - I think you might be right! I reread the post and I see that he might have been referring to the prompt. If, so, Whistle Pig, please accept my apology! :o And I would then say that I totally agree with you - the prompt isn't the kind of question I'd choose to determine who gets a scholarship. It might be ok for a short answer essay to get some sense of what the kid is like, but that's about it.

It's easy for a post to be misinterpreted and this is a perfect example. Normally I would have searched for some of Whistle Pig's previous posts (to see if he had been posting snarky replies just to stir up trouble) before I snapped at him, but with searching disabled, I couldn't. Again, sorry!

Does anyone know how many students are invited to the fellows weekend for the business fellows program? If you're invited and go are you likely to be accepted? If Elon is your first choice and you've gotten EA (presidential) but need to consider in-state schools (NCSU) if the best opportunity's at Elon don't work this is an important question. All feedback is welcome and congrats to others seeking similar opportunities.

I don't have any hard numbers, but based on some browsing of the school newspaper's past issues and stories about Fellows weekend, I would guesstimate that the Business Fellows invite 60-70 people. Of those, 25 Fellows are selected. Of those 25, 7 will be awarded scholarships. So chances of being accepted is a little less than 50-50. Chances of getting a scholarship out of an initial invite is around 10-12%.

Where did you see that the notification was going to be Jan. 26?

ummm...look at a couple of posts above. called elon this week--fellows notification is by mail--letters sent out 1/26.

On the elon web site--in the fellows application section

That would be tonight at 12:00? Or just wait for snail mail?

Sorry, I looked there but all I found was this in the Fellows App FAQ:

What happens after I apply?
All Fellows applications are reviewed after January 10. Finalists for each program are selected by faculty committees. If you are a finalist, you will be invited one month in advance to attend Fellows and Scholarship Weekend, March 2-3, 2007.

Is Jan. 26 mentioned someplace else? I didn't think notification would be made till the beginning of February. I hope you're right, though! :)

Last year, according to the CC people, the e-mail went out on 1/27 -- the last Friday of January. So I guess I wouldn't be surprised if e-mails went out tomorrow. But it could really be anytime in the next week or so.

It's funny...I know I saw the 1/26 date somewhere, but now I can't find it. I did however, email admissions earlier this week and they said notification letters were going out via regular mail today (1/26).

So excited! My d rec'd an email today notifying her that she has been selected to continue with the Fellows and Scholarship competition in both journalism and leadership. I am really excited for her.

Congrats JAH! Of course, I don't have access to my son's e-mail and he won't be around until later this evening. I'm not terribly optimistic, but I have my fingers crossed.

I recieved an e-mail invitation today too, so watch your inboxes.
