Fellows essay question.

My S received an email today inviting him to compete for the Honors and Elon Fellows scholarships. I don't know if we'll be able to make it up there for the first day of activities, but it appears from the schedule of events that the first day isn't really mandatory since they are only having tours, breakout sessions and a reception in the evening. The interviews, class visit and essays are on Saturday. I'm disappointed that they aren't having the kids stay overnight in the dorms with hosts, but I guess there are way too many of them to do that.

Lderochi, good luck to your son! And congratulations to jah's daughter, and Ozy, too!

Nope, looks like a no-go on this end. Thanks for the good wishes, though.

lderochi,
It seems Elon uses Fellows to lure EA and regular decisions applicants.

I too, wish that they had aranged some sort of activity for the kids on Friday night so they could get a feel for a typical w/e night at elon. i would like my d to see dorm life and greek life in action.

your children are more than welcome to stay with us

That's nice of you, but she would not want to stay with anyone she doesn't know. Not many kids from our area go to Elon and she knows she is going to kind have to take a "flyer" on the peer aspect of the college choice. She has visited campus and spent a Friday night there. She thought Elon was beautiful and likes what the school has to offer, but she didn't come away with a definitive feel for the vibe. Definitely no "click". Maybe when she goes back for the Fellows w/e she will leave wtih a better feel for this aspect of Elon.

Isn't it possible to arrange an overnight visit for that Thursday, independent of the Fellows weekend? The "visit campus" part of the Elon website allows you to register to visit a class.

Sure, that's possible, but wouldn't work for us because S would have to miss 2 days of school instead of just 1. I think he'll probably take up grantb on his offer to host him that night. He won't have another chance to do an overnight so it's now or never.

In reply to jah's comment about "definitive feel for the vibe", I have to agree. Granted, we visited in the summer, and were impressed with the campus, but we could not get a handle on the atmosphere.

My daughter is going to call Elon when she gets home from school today and ask a little more about the Fellows interview process (who is it with, how long, any insight they will give on the nature of the interview, etc.) She also want to know more about the Seminar Response Essay--what it means, what she can expect. Can anyone here shed some light on the process?

Also, auroak, where are you from? We are from suburban Chicago and my D goes to a hs with over 4000 students. I don't think anyone from her hs has gone to Elon. Unlike other schools she is considering where she knows at least 3 or kids who are attending, there is no one for her to talk about their actual expereince at Elon. Has anyone out there read the College ******* book on Elon? if so, do you agree with the review of the school?

We are from suburban Cleveland, OH. My D's class is about 240, and we know of a few people in the area who have gone there, although we don't know them personally. Are you from Naperville by any chance?

We live in north suburban chicago--naperville is west.

Dear Whistle Pig,
for your information I was allready accepted at Elon, and I had trouble starting this essay.
I'm third in my class and got 5s on my two AP tests
I'm not stupid, and I'm guessing neither is this person.
your intelligence however, I question.
people think in different ways, so any easy topic for one might be an enigma for others
You should stop thinking so highly of yourself

good luck to ya Viaticus
