Fellows Weekend

We saw far more girls than boys. I think if you are a boy, you have an excellent shot. They mentioned that about 600 were invited, though I think some students who could not attend were allowed to do phone interviews. About 200 total will be fellows, divided among the various areas. In Communications, we were told that 90 were invited to compete for 25 spots. Still, as we told my D, it’s nice to be invited. It is certainly a good recruiting tool for the school, as it gets some of the stronger students there well before April 1 notifications from other schools.

For the teaching fellows program, we were told there were 60 candidates, and we only saw 4 boys. Given that S had very positive experiences at the reception and with the interview, we do think the odds are in his favor!

Samtalya, you may have been the only one in a lime green sweatshirt, but you certainly weren’t the only one with frizzy hair!!

There were 97 business fellow prospects there and it will get whittled down to 27-30. This may be the one area where there was a group of males, not sure of the balance, but enough. Last year biz fellows-17 female, 10 male.

Remember the school is 60/40 female to male ratio. My S is ok with that. :)

FYI there was an article in the school newspaper about Fellows weekend.

[Elon applicants, current students aim to impress during Fellows Weekend | The Pendulum](<a href=“Informasi Seputar Pendidikan Dan Ilmu Pengetahuan”>Informasi Seputar Pendidikan Dan Ilmu Pengetahuan)

thanks scout. not sure if i like the biz numbers of 90% committed. at first i thought great, less kids to entice. then i thought oh no, less alternate spots!!

is everyone second guessing? how many more days do we have to wait?

Definitely feeling like there was a strong group of students in all areas. The committed part may or may not be accurate, as some students might think they are committed but might change their minds after April 1. Many have deposited early for the room choosing advantage. (Though, interestingly, two current freshmen told us that neither of them ended up in dorms that were on their preference lists. Both were ok with the final location, luckily.)

I heard them say that decisions will be made in two weeks, but they did not promise to release them prior to April 1.

If you check on track, it says that April 1 is the release date, but I too heard that decisions will be made in two weeks. Also someone said they would call. I will make sure I check on track from the 15th on just to keep driving myself crazy!

well let’s hope all the ccers get a fellow!

Bubmom, do you know when those 2 current freshmen (the ones who didn’t get their dorm choice) made their deposits? My S hasn’t made his deposit yet because we’re concerned that other competing schools will find out and not admit him. Because of that I’m a little concerned that if he goes to Elon he won’t get a good dorm since he’d be making his deposit relatively late.

Do colleges really share names of students who have deposited before the May 1 deadline? I hope not!

I found this on CC in “Ask the Dean”–

"Although most colleges are not allowed to extract commitments from prospective students until May 1, some schools work around this by offering refundable deposits. If the deposit to your son’s “safety school” is affordable, it’s fine to send it now. This information will not be shared. It will have no effect whatsoever on his other college outcomes. However, do double-check that there won’t be any absurd hoops to jump through should you want the deposit returned, and be sure to remember get it back if your son matriculates elsewhere. (I suspect that some schools make a little dough off of candidates who lose track of deposits and don’t ask for refunds when they are entitled to them.)

Alternatively, before sending any money, you can grill the admission folks about what, exactly, this deposit provides. Without it, will your son get less desirable housing or perhaps no housing at all? If this is a college that guarantees housing to all freshmen and if the frosh residential options are fairly comparable, then there really isn’t any “better housing,” and you need not bother with the deposit until your son makes his final choice."

One of the current students is my nephew. He was admitted early action and did deposit early, but I don’t know how early. The other is a friend of his and I don’t know when she deposited. Both do seem happy with where the school put them, though, so I don’t think it matters as much as you might think.
Is there a way for other schools to find out that someone has sent a deposit? The funds are fully refundable until May 1.

I think the deposit pressure is a way for Elon to make some $$ off of our concern - and in the end, we can’t control the room selection, anyway!

I don’t see how Elon makes money on a fully refundable deposit. If you request it back by May 1, you get 100% back, and how much interest can they possibly earn on $500 for 3 months?

Whether your kid gets their first choice housing depends in part upon what housing they choose. D was ED and her roommate was EA. They got their 2nd choice dorm. Their first choice was in the historic part of campus near Alamance (can’t remember the dorm name, whatever the co-ed dorm is over there) and at the time it was mostly reserved for sophs and special-interest living. There were only about 12 beds in it for freshmen, but everyone requested it anyway because the rooms were big and close to classes and MacEwan dining hall. That was before the 3 new Colonnades halls opened, though.

Since Elon already tore down all the subpar housing (ie- Chandler, Coclough and Maynard) and Staley and Mofit are next the remaining housing should be fine. They all have their pros and cons. Incidentally my son was EA and sent his deposit in mid march. He got his last choice (out of six). Sophomore year he did get his first choice though.

My son is a freshman and he was accepted EA last year. He put his deposit in(Feb I think) and got his first choice dorm-Virginia Hall in West area, which is coed. His dorm sounds like the one that Lafalum is describing. He likes it so much(location, location, location!) that he is staying in that same dorm next year. There was something on the roommate questionnaire that asked what was more important to him, dorm placement or roommate placement(or something to that effect) and he put dorm! Everything worked out just fine. It is probably a question of matching roommates together. I think one of the biggest problems freshmen face is when they are not compatible with their roommate.

Just wondering if anyone has heard about results from the fellows competition last month.

heard anything yet?

They were working to finalize fellows invites by spring break. Because Elon has a Winter term, spring break is late (just started today). I heard that the fellows selection was very very competitive this year. Good luck.

My daughter found out on Friday…two thumbs up!

My daughter is still waiting to hear on both the honors and college awards. However, her friend found out he was accepted for both on Friday morning. Evidently, they told him he had to make a decision by 5pm Friday. I think he picked Honors fellows.

So should we assume if we didn’t hear on Friday that our children were not selected and we will learn on April 1 they they were denied? Those of you that heard, did your child recieve an email or a phone call?
