I'm familiar with the NSF fellowship, but I was wondering if there are any others I should be looking into to support a PhD in engineering. Any suggestions?

There are a few more general science ones: Department of Defense and Hertz. The Hertz one is extremely hard to get though, and I believe you have to go to certain schools to apply. This year I believe the Department of Energy also has one for first and second year graduate students.

NSF, DoE, DOD, SMART, NIH are just a few government grants you can apply for. There also exists many private fellowships.

Your best bet is to go through your school funding page to see various opportunities and attend graduate school fellowship fairs.

You also can look for ones specific to your area of interest. I am applying for one through NASA that is for their Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate, which actually pays BETTER than the NSF GRFP, but only applies to aeronautics research.
