Felt like a Community College..

First off, I just want to say that I know the U of M is an excellent school and I am by no means deliberately bashing the school in any way.

I had my official Visit during November. I did not like the school one bit, and here is why:

40% of the students looked to be over the age of 30

Tiny residential community in comparison to other big-ten schools I've visited (UIUC, Indiana, Mich. State)

They said that a good number of students are commuters

They said "we accomodate all students, and we offer many evening and night classes to conveniently fit adult work-schedules"

There were many really trashy kids there

They kept talking about "online options this" and "online version of that" so you can do it from home...

...It just screamed "University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Community College." I mean, I'm aware that it's not an easy school to get into and that most of the people who go there really like it, but I got the same vibe at the U of M that I get at Anoka-Ramsey Community College, at which I participate in Dual Enrollment. It just didn't "feel" like a university, like basically every school in the big ten did.

I'm just wondering if anyone else felt this way? And does this feeling go away once you start going here?

Thats odd, I couldn’t see how any big ten school would feel like a community college.

Quite a bit of sweeping generalizations with this post…

If you’re uncomfortable with the atmosphere, then maybe you might not want to attend.

It’s possible that you were at the wrong school. Maybe you were at a Community College by mistake. I’ve visited every Big Ten school except Penn State. Minnesota Twin Cities ranks behind only Wisconsin in overall university feel to our family. I’m from Illinois and didn’t graduate from Minnesota. I loved the school.

Where are you going to go then?

Interesting observations, IamOnABoat. I am a current Freshman at the U and ansolutely love it. I have never visited any community college ever. Never thought Anoka-Ramsey would be in the same league (in terms of choices and resources) as any of the big ten but may be I have been wrong. Thank you for providing a different perspective.

40% of the students looked to be over the age of 30-- You do realize U of M is also a grad school. There are many older students at every college. Have you not visited any other college?

Tiny residential community in comparison to other big-ten schools I’ve visited (UIUC, Indiana, Mich. State)

They said that a good number of students are commuters-- and this affects you how?

They said “we accomodate all students, and we offer many evening and night classes to conveniently fit adult work-schedules” OH NO!!! how could they???

There were many really trashy kids there…i’m sure there aren’t ANY trashy people at other universities.

They kept talking about “online options this” and “online version of that” so you can do it from home…welcome to the 21st century.

I don’t think the U will be missing out if you don’t go there.

^^ wow what the hell crawled up ur a**?

the rest of us understand your point anyways Boat.

Define “trashy people.”

Is this your first college visit?
