Fencing future?

Welcome to CC, sysdawg. Your son seems like a great applicant. 790 Math Level 2 as a sophomore jumps out. With his academic/fencing profile he should have good options.

You seem to have a very good understanding of the situation. As you know, next year will be big. Junior year grades; test scores; a lot of cadet, junior, and D1 events; and the uncontrollable variables: the different teams’ epee needs and the academic profiles of other top epee recruits.

There’s no limit to the number of coaches a student may contact. There is a limit, though, to the number of “official visits” a student may accept. OVs are when the prospect travels to the college at the college’s expense for an recruiting visit of up to 48 hours. IMO, OVs aren’t a big deal in fencing. Some schools don’t offer them and most visits are done more informally anyway.

To the best of my knowledge at the colleges you’ve mentioned:

H - yes
Y - reluctant to use the limited influence he has
P - yes
S - yes, but a little less than H and P
JHU - I believe so, but my info is dated
Columbia - yes
UPenn - yes
Brown - yes
Duke - yes
Vassar - I believe so, but I’m not sure
Haverford - yes, at least as of a couple years ago
UNC - I don’t know.

Your son is well positioned. Good luck.

“You seem to have a very good understanding of the situation.”

Well, that would be from reading your posts and others on CC! Thank you for the info, in the post immediately above, and your many others.

P.S. I can’t figure out how to make real quotes (in the colored box)…in quick reply there is a checkbox to quote but I can’t click it for some reason.

Schoolhouse,

Thank you for the PM.

Here’s how to do it:

Put the word “quote” in brackets before the quoted text, and then put “/quote” in brackets after the quoted text.

Like this:
text…
Except I put in an extra space at the end of the second “quote”. Now I’ll copy the line above and delete the extra space.

Thanks Sherpa.

I hope all of you are enjoying beautiful Columbus for summer nationals, July 1st was a crazy day for coaches having seen Northwestern locked up with a for sure HYPC potential for two hours, then Duke for another hour and UPenn just said hey you’re in(parent alum). So I hope some of you had time to make the arrangements. I can say this that WSU/UDM/CSU TU and SHU coaches were also in full court press mode too!

Hi Schoolhouse hope you are having fun at nationals. We just finished a 3 day camp and off to another three days in the sun tomorrow and over the weekend (for another one of the kids).

Just wanted to say that I have been trying to reply to your PMs but think I might not be able to. No matter what I send it comes up that I have sent nothing. Maybe I just haven’t posted enough yet to have PM privileges. Anyway thank you for your messages!

…

Fencing recruiting starts here…

pass it along when you talk recruiting on other fencing sites.

Can anyone share any stories of their experience with the Duke coach?

Alex and Elizabeth are very nice and the team feels like a family. Like many coaches, they don’t actively seek recruits, but if you contact them and you’re academically qualified and a good fencer they’ll support you through admissions.

What else would you like to know?
