I am a junior in high school and fence epee. My birthdate allows me to fence cadet until JOs this year. I have mediocre/ decent cadet results, and am ranked in the top 30. My junior and senior rankings are quite low (top 100 and top 120 respectively).
ACT: 35
GPA:4.0
Class Rank: I do not know
AI: according to goschoolwise.com, it is around 230
Extracurriculars (this category is lacking because of the huge time commitment that fencing is): TAG (talented and gifted) program, academic bowl team…basically it
I can probably add more info, but I cannot think of anything else right now
Thanks in advance
A couple more bits of info: A16 rating and a 1490 PSAT with a 224 selection index
If you’re not recruitable for fencing, it may not help much. Yes, they’ll see it as something that you love to do and are committed to, but I wouldn’t think that it would have a huge influence on your admission results. That being said, you qualify academically for literally any school in the nation so good job on that! Write great essays and choose your rec teachers wisely. Then hope for the best. Ives are tough admits for everyone w/o a major hook, so you’ll never know until you try!
Go to the following thread:
I highly recommend reading the several-page long thread before posting, as it has a lot of great information already and many of the questions you’ll likely ask are probably already answered. There are parents of current Ivy league fencers and well as other selective schools that watch this thread if you want to ask about your specific situation.
The answer to your question is almost certainly “it depends.” Your academics appear good enough to not block recruiting, but whether you will be recruited depends on the specific schools you are targeting, the specific coach and how actively they recruit, the current team make-up, how many other fencers in your gender/weapon are graduating next year, how many fencers at the top of your relevant points lists are rising seniors and competing for the same slots, and how many of those fencers have grades that pass Ivy league recruitment standards. Good luck!
Thanks for the reply! Actually I have read that thread, and I did get a lot of good information. I will try posting there as per your advice and see i what happens. Thanks
YO fencer here too! DM me if you want me to talk you through the getting recuited process, i just did it this year
Usually, division one coaches begin to look at recruited athletes in sophomore year. By October of your senior year, you will know for sure whether a coach will back you in the admissions process.
My daughter reached out to an ivy coach the beginning of her senior year and after some back and forth the coach supported her application. If my daughter had not reached out to the coach, she would not be at an ivy right now. She’s not a fencer but I think it does not hurt to reach out to coaches with your interest and stats. My nephew is doing that currently for wrestling and he has a few coaches interested after he contacted them declaring his interest and sent them his wrestling stats.
