Honestly, us parents with kids already in school are doing this because we feel compelled to HELP either clueless kids or ditto parents take the best paths toward their goals. I learned so much from this site, my second son never would have gotten into Midd without help of the CCers. And if I’d been on sooner, I could have learned enough to save my oldest son weeks of anxiety and heartbreak. Really. So, thanks Sherpa and all my fellow adult posters. Let’s give ourselves a pat on the back for “giving back”…

As I often say: it’s a jungle out there, and if you aren’t rich and well-connected, or have a better guidance department than our school(public) does, CC is PRICELESS.

Does anyone know what colleges have competitive fencing “clubs” ? Club teams can vary greatly, ranging from mostly beginners looking for “fun”, to those with experienced coaches and schedules. Any info would be appreciated.

I am glad to see that our great parents, Sherpa and our group, not only spend a great deal of time paying it forward…they also can spot a bored ■■■■■■■■ teen when they read one.
I too am thankful for the sleuthing tools available on CC etc…

Not sure why teens find any kind of interest in these types of ■■■■■■■■ threads…certainly they must have too much time on their hands…and my guess is their lack of stellar gpa and ECs shows it…

Sadly they have the ability to procreate IRL! Is that the gene pool we need?

I think it’s probably rooted in a lack of attention at home. If a kid doesn’t have parents interested in what they’re doing, maybe it’s nice to have a group of random adults spending time advising them on some hypothetical fantasy world.

I just wish kids like that would realize they don’t have to be deceptive to get some advice and attention from people that really just want to help out.

The only one I know of directly is the one at Carnegie Mellon. As of last year, they practiced 2x/week and had a coach come for an hour every week. They seemed to have a reasonably active competitive schedule.

My suggestion would be to look at the school first rather than look at which school have active clubs, then e-mail the president of the club at that school and ask. The ones we contacted were quite helpful.

I think the UChicago club is pretty active. There really isn’t one at Claremont Consortium schools unfortunately.

Sherpa, I wish I would have found your advice a year sooner! We have done some of the things you mentioned and now, anxiously waiting for a few decisions from schools where his application is being supported (verbally)…I thought we would have heard something sooner but still waiting…wish us luck!!!
