Can anyone explain exactly what financial benefits come with the packages if one wins one of these, particularly if you are OOS? I am confused what a waiver actually is and what would be left to pay out of pocket if one actually wins one of these scholarships.

I think it is confusing as well…any clarification would be helpful!

My d is a first year fellow.

OK- here goes. Remember that GA residents FF receive the Hope ( Zell Miller ) scholarship.

The In- state students receive a $10,000 stipend plus first years receive an additional $500 on campus living allowance. This was recently raised from $9,000 to cover the changes in Hope ( no longer covers fees). The stipends are deposited directly into the student’s bursar account.

The OS students receive a waiver - they pay tuition as if they were a Georgia resident. They also receive an additional amount comparable to the Hope scholarship.

Basically, FF ( both instate and out of state) are on a free ride. We have paid for books out of pocket and maybe a few fees that are a couple of hundred dollars. Next semesters invoices have not all been issued, so not quite sure yet. If you choose to live in one of the cheaper dorms- most fellows live in Myers- you may actually have some of your stipend left.

As d is a first year- we haven’t looked at the study abroad allowance yet, but I think it is $7,500. They are starting to plan spring break trip to NY/ DC and the Maymester in Oxford. Very exciting!

I hope this clarifies.

That is good information. So, it seems that the Ramsey would not be a “free ride”, but still a nice scholarship to receive. Gibson, did your daughter rush a sorority or would she not have time for that with her FF activities? Is she liking Myers?

Congrats on her accomplishment! FF is rare and she must be amazing!

To be awarded the Ramsey scholar is an amazing accomplishment too. I had a look at the benefits. I am not sure if the Ramseys also received an increase in their stipend this year. But, it looks like to me that both in and out of students would pay approx $5000 towards dorms and the food plan. Tuition would be either covered by Hope or the waiver and increased stipend. Remember the cost to live off campus is cheaper so your living expenses will be less after the first year. Ramseys are also eligible for CURO money that fellows are not. Maybe a Ramsey on this forum could add some more info.

My D did not rush. She is involved with another UGA activity which takes up much of her time. Out of this years freshmen 3 of the girls and I think 3 of the boys rushed.

She loves Myers- the girls on her hall are really nice and they hang out together on the weekends and at night.

Can anyone tell me the likelihood of becoming a fellow? I have a 2310 SAT, 35 ACT, 4.0 uw gpa, 4.7 weighted, 5s on all 7 of my AP exams so far, tons of extracurriculars and volunteer projects, president of national honor society, and vp of student council. I think I’m ranked 3rd in my class of about 350. Can anyone tell me my chances or tell me their stats if they are a fellow?

If you have a personality to go with these fantastic credentials and can humbly sell yourself in writing and in person, you have a great shot. My D was chosen as a FF but turned it down. She loves her college but would have taken FF over every other admit including Duke’s Robertson (full ride + travel), Yale and Brown’s PLME (8 year undergrad-medical school combo).

Thank you so much for responding! I’m really hoping to be a fellow. Everything I have heard about it is amazing!

Thank you Gibson for detailing the fellows program. Do they release how many apply for this scholarship?

They will certainly post data sometime. I believe there will be somewhere over 1,000 applicants for the final 50-60 students who receive offers.

Last year 950+ applications. 54 invited to the interview weekend- 53 attended. I think around 25 were offered FF, 17 accepted. Biggest class for a few years.

Good Luck to all who applied, come back and tell us if you make it to the weekend.
