Ok, I'm applying ed to a certain ivy and i do not really need financial aid. but my parents say that while there is not much chance, like 3%, of getting aid, that i should just tick mark that i need financial aid on my app just in case. will saying that you are going to apply for financial aid hurt you even just a little bit for an asian, great sat, great gpa, not too much hook but decent ec's?

Most definitely, yes.

really? but if you say you will apply for fin. aid but when they look at your application for aid and it shows that you are wealthy enough to pay without much problem, would they just think you only applied for fin. aid for the hell of it or would they still conisder you someone who might not be able to pay if accepted

Unless it is either Yale, Princeton or Harvard (need-blind admissions to everyone including internationals) or if you are American Penn and some others that are domestically need-blind, the university will look to see if you are applying for financial aid or not. If you are applying for financial aid (ticking the box) then IMO they will see it as you are going to need financial aid at university. In your case, coming from the most competitive part (Asians) that almost all need financial aid, you will stand out as not needing and that will give you an advantage.

If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident then all of the ivies are need blind which means that your ability to pay will not be a factor in the admissions process. If you are an international student as NJ stated, only HYP are need blind to international students. Keep in mind that your ability to pay full freight will not make up for deficiencies in your application.
