Filing CSS financial Aid?

I am applying to Brown ED and intend to apply for financial aid. Is it mandatory that I fill out the CSS? Or can I just wait until FAFSA to that (if I did get in, that is). The CSS would cost me $25 to send to Brown, whereas FAFSA is free.

and: https://financialaid.brown.edu/Cmx_Content.aspx?cpId=346</a></p>

Important: Failure to submit a financial aid application on time for your first year can have serious consequences. We strongly suggest that all applicants to the University read the information provided concerning Need Blind admission and the consequences of not submitting an application for financial aid during the admission process.

Thanks for the info.

Also, you can apply for a fee waiver. This info can be found if you search for CSS fee waiver. But, as fireandrain said, it is vital that you do everything on time and as it is stated.

Hi Fireandrain
I have question about financial aid application for Brown for Canadian, I have applied for the ED on Oct 30th this year. My dad called the admin office last week, a lady told him that there is no admision impact if you apply for financial aid. So my dad applied the finacial aid application last Thursday through CSS, after that I read the Brown web site carefully again, it seems to me that it does have impact since foreign student is need-aware based admision: “We will continue to consider foreign applicants on a need-aware basis, that is, Brown will take into account their financial need in making admission decisions.”

Can I cancel the financial aid application? If yes, how?
Thanks lots!

stephen: You need to call admissions - I don’t know how to cancel a financial aid application.

However – if you need financial aid, you should apply for it. If you get in and get no aid, how are you going to pay $54,000/year?

JFV–Why would you let a $25 filing fee (which you can ask to be waivered, check the box on the form) get in the way of possibly thousands of dollars in grant money that Brown has available?

The CSS that Brown & other schools use has different questions from the FAFSA and takes more things into account, from your family’s circumstances. File it ASAP! Believe me I know—I went there with substantial aid & so did my daughter.

Stephen, if you really need aid, how are you going to attend Brown if you get in, as Fire & Rain asked?

Furthermore, all universities are need - aware, at some point. Brown has less $$$ to hand around than Harvard or Princeton. If they have accepted nearly all of the class and have gotten near the end of the monies they have alloted for the year for FA, they will be taking a look at whether Student A or B needs aid–but only for the students who are already marginal admits. Needing aid will not be the major factor in whether or not they accept you.

As a need-blind school, Brown no longer does this (it did back when it was need aware).

I had never heard of it before. I didn’t know if it was just a alternative for the FAFSA or something like that. And if the FAFSA is the free one, obviously I would have just done it. The counselor at my high school never gave us any info on a CSS form. But no worries - its filled out.
