"Fill in the box to the right with something that appeals to you"

Hey,
I am applying for transfer to Rice, and on the common app supplement it has a small empty box beside which is the statement "Fill in the box to the right with something that appeals to you." What are they looking for. Is it what it appears to be? What sort of things do people put in there?

well...though i'm no expert I believe this is used to get a taste of your personality and probably to entertaint the adcoms a bit. What people put in seems to greatly vary. Try not to overthink it though. and don't worry about it not being clear- i spent a lot of time caught up on the fact that what i put in the box was not obvious.

i ended up putting an illustration of the country panama that included various objects important to panamanian culture and said panama on it. the reason i chose this (although it doesn't matter since i had no place to explain it on the application) is because my father and his family are from panama and i would someday like to travel there and learn more about the culture.

hope that helps.

I chose to glue in a picture of winter clothing cuz it was cold and I didn't have any. But that was back when my furnace still worked...........

bump? seems like plenty more people would have something to say about this.

I'd suggest doing a search on Rice box or variations of that as this topic has been discussed and rediscussed numerous times over the past years.

Good luck!

umm anything man...it doesnt matter really

Do a search and you will find a note that says that you don't want anyone else's ideas, because then you won't be able to think of your own without someone else's ideas coming back to haunt you...
It's just anything and I do mean anything that appeals to you or says "YOU" in an interesting way... except grains of Rice or something like that. That is a very bad idea :-).

i loved this part of the app

Picture Ziggi peaking up over a desk. Only half his head is showing, nose and eyes. Both hands are pulling him up as he peaks up over the desk. That's what I drew.

dd put in a scrap of fabric. DS put in a picture of his favorite tennis player.

my interviewer said that a few years ago there was one that said SEE ATTACHED in the box.
the next day a huge papier mache elephant arrived at the admissions office.
Now, I'm not saying you should go out and create a gigantic mammal out of shredded newspaper and glue (however awesome that may be), but it's a thought.

That being said, I put a really cute photo I took of my sister with one arm around each of our horses. Just put something that means a lot to you.
[I got in ID, if that makes a difference. Probably more to do with my grades, SATs, recs, and resume....but it could be that I have a really cute pony.]

I'm a freshman at rice and a friend of mine photoshopped his head onto a fish. That's what he put into the box. His explanation: "I like to swim and fish"
