Film / Acting

Anyone know about student filmmaking, and how one would get involved in that? I would love to have roles in some student films. Or, does anyone know anyone at Cal that is seriously pursuing acting, or how to find those resources on campus?

Thanks guys!

There is a department of Theater, Dance and Performance on campus. There are student productions. The film department is mostly theoretical and not very production oriented, but you will probably find at least something there. This is all I know about, hopefully someone actually involved with these and more resources.

I've also heard that there aren't many student film productions on the Berkeley campus. That's a little weird as I know it's an academically oriented school, generally, but it is right next door to SF.

I don't wanna whap Cal over the head for this, but if you are really interested in acting and film making, I'd say you would have better luck at a school like UCLA, USC or NYU. Options for the production/technical end, especially in film are a little lean. :( But they do exist, you just gotta work for it. If you want to do theory or go straight theather however, Cal isn't a bad choice.

Andrew,

I'm very familiar with UCLA's/USC's/NYU's superiority in film and/or acting programs, but the problem was: I got a Regent's Scholarship from Cal (which, with my family's EFC being very low, equaled to almost $19K/year), and UCLA gave me $6500 in loans/year and $2500 in work study. Bleh!

But, I'm a BEAR NOW! :D

UCLA's film program is incredibly hard to get into- they accept only 40 students after they apply sophomore or junior year (I forget). You're guaranteed to get into film here if you pass the three pre-reqs. Just make the department that much better. ;)

Tara: Ah, that changes everything, then welcome to Cal. :D Don't think I was trying to disparage Cal either, just putting the facts out there, but our film department is reasonably good if you wanna do stuff more aimed at critical studies.

Reasonably good? Pretty freaking solid, more like!

:)
