I am currently considering going into a film major. I wanna ask if the film program at American University is a good one to apply to?

If you must major in film, choose somewhere with a great financial package. It’s such a gamble of a profession regardless of the current job situation. If you want to keep making films after graduation, you’ll be glad not to have all your money tied up in loan repayments.

Personally, IMHO, I’d avoid film as a major. Do it as a minor or as a student club. Make films. Watch films. Think about films. Lots and lots of the most famous film directors, even modern ones, haven’t gone to film school. What is your passion/passions aside from film? What would you make films about? Think about that for some alternative majors.

American university is a good program and especially strong in documentary, environmental and social medial. For big hollywood industry films this might not be the first choice. For documentary and politics it is top notch.

American University is a great place for film. Like maddenmd said, they do not focus on big Hollywood feature films. However, D.C. has many outlets and places to intern and work where you can use your film skills. I have volunteered at almost every major film festival in D.C., and am considering an internship at the American Film Institute nearby! Major in film if it’s your passion, don’t let anyone dissuade you. I plan on majoring in film and media arts, and hope to go to American University!
