Hi, I just got accepted into Amherst and I am super excited because I think it is the best fit for me out of all the schools to which I applied! I just have a question about film at amherst. I applied as an English major, but I have a very big interest in film. I know Amherst is not really “known” for film studies, but I see that they do at least have a major (my English major is pretty definite, but I’m thinking of minoring or double majoring in film). At this point, I’m not thinking of becoming a director or anything (don’t know if I’m brave enough for that kind of risk :)) and so therefore I don’t think the prestige of the film program is that important; I’m more interested in teaching it because I would really like to be an English/film professor. Besides, if I ended up REALLY getting into film, I can always attend a film school after college.

I’m just wondering if, in addition to the film major at Amherst, there is any sort of film “scene” I could be a part of. I looked online and saw that Amherst has a club called the “Film Collective,” but I can’t seem to find any information about what this club actually does. Are there any students interested in filmmaking? (For example, I’m also considering Carleton College. It has a filmmaking club with students who make their own movies all the time.) I know that other colleges have their own college cinemas where different movies are shown every few days or so. Is there anything like that at Amherst? Are there students who would want to go to the movies with me all the time or make a film with me? :)
