Film at Columbia

I'm definitely going to be majoring in Film Studies and I was wondering whether anybody knew anything about the program at Columbia. I'm also looking at Wesleyan, NWU, NYU, etc, but I really love Columbia. From what I can gather from the course catalogue and their website it looks pretty good, but if anybody has had any experience with the program, or knows someone who does, I'd love to hear what you thought. Thanks so much.

I wasn't a film major but the program is great. The grad film students have been dominating festivals like Sundance over the past few years, and the quality of instruction they receive trickles down.

Nevertheless, if you're looking for a "pure" film education, NYU Tisch can't really be beat. But Columbia also offers a liberal arts curriculum, meaning you can explore your interests outside of film. And NYU Tisch will always be there for grad school (if you don't elect to continue at Columbia, that is) anyway.

From what I've heard (also not a film major), it's largely theoretical, film history and such rather than actually making student films. That may or may not be what you're looking for, but you should probably run that by a film student though just to make sure.

I am in the same boat as the OP. Rising senior with film interests.

Thanks for any more information coming along.

Thanks so much for the help, everyone.
