Film Major and Going to Medical School?

So, filmmaking and neurology are two thing I love. I really want to have a BA or BFA in Cinematic Arts but I really would like to go to Medical School to have an MD in neurology. Can I major in just Film while being in a pre-med track and taking the required classes for it? I thought that a double major in Biochemistry or Psychology and Film/Cinematic Arts would be a lot to handle. Thank you.

In theory, folks can major in just about anything and go to med school, IF they have the pre-requisites for med school AND do well in the MCATs AND have ECs AND amazing recs, etc. My niece majored in American History and went to podiatry school. One nephew double-majored in biology and math and went to med school. I’m not sure what my other major who is in med school majored in. Cinema can be pretty demanding though and I’m not sure how well scheduling for your science labs would mesh with your cinema courses. You could ask the advisors about this.

You could probably do a BA in film/cinematic arts and also do the pre-med requirements; I would imagine doing a BFA and being pre-med would be very difficult.

“…like to go to Medical School to have an MD in neurology”
You should understand in world of med education, med school is the undergraduate part of the training. When you graduate from med school you have an MD, not an MD in some specific area (eg neurology). Although you would get some exposure to neurology in med school, in order to be an MD/neurologist, it would take 4 additional years beyond med school of graduate med training (aka residency) in neurology.

I would look to schools where you can get a BA. Many BFA programs will not have the necessary array of lab science coursework needed to fufill pre-med requirements.

You could finish your bfa and take a post bacc to make up the med school prerequisite and go to med school

@artloversplus That would assume that the OP has a bottomless pile of money to draw from.

Bfa require a lot of stage time and intern in film companies, you might have to take one or two gap years for med school requirements any way.

I have another suggestion.

At my kids’ undergrad, they have a theater group for non-theater majors. It was originally started by a group of engineering majors, but they quickly allowed any major (English, math, business, bio, whatever) to join. They put on 1 production every semester and they’re quite good.

Frankly, if you know you’re going to go to medical school, a BFA is a massive waste of money time, effort, energy etc. If you want to study film/theater, just find a way to do it while getting a BA at a regular university.
