Hi,
I am currently a rising senior looking into applying to colleges for film production. I know a huge part of the film application is the portfolio, but I have never actually made my own films. I have always been very committed to my school’s theater technical department and have a lot of that work to show, but I was wondering if I could even put that in my portfolio. I have no idea where to even begin when building one but I would really like to get into a good school. What do I do?
It depends on the schools you apply to. Some schools don’t require a portfolio, some do. Some schools that do require a portfolio don’t require it to be just film. I know American doesn’t require a portfolio, and some schools like Drexel allow you to submit non-film artwork.
@ecarlin1 It’s totally fine to start with little to no film experience. That’s how I got my start. I’m a film student who was recently admitted to CSU Long Beach and I can say that @izrk02 is correct. While some of the schools I applied to did not have a portfolio requirement, some of the renown film schools in the country do require a portfolio with a prompt. Just be aware that portfolios have different instructions ranging from video submissions to photo essays. So make sure you check the instructions at the college you are applying to first before making anything.
