I looked at the website, and I saw that there are some film classes at Tufts...

To anyone who knows from experience: are these classes any good? How is the film program?

thanks

-----bump-----

people who did Making Movies absolutely loved it. But it's pretty competitive to get in, I think. Definitely give it a try!

There isn't a film program per se. There is a minor in the Communications department through the Excollege. It seems that in my years at tufts the "film program" is expanding* by offering new courses and more resources in order to meet the demand of students interested in pursuing/partaking in film/tv/media etc. fields. It appears that this is inevitable as there are quite a few, in my opinion, Tufts alum that pursue/succeed in the Communications and Film realms. I would like to list some names but blah would be my answer. If you really want to know, i'd be happy to tell you some other time.

Oh, you can also take film courses offered at the MFA.

Anyway, if you want, you should definitely explore the program when you get to Tufts.

*a lab, pretty darn good cameras--XL1s/2s, GL2s, new faculty, new classes

The film department at Tufts is growing very rapidly and CMS is the most popular minor (with almost 100 students). I took Producing Films for Social Change fall of last year and had a phenomenal experience- this class is a MUST if you are interested and I can assure you that regardless of whether you have experience in film you will get a lot out of it as long as you are willing to put in the time (spending several nights a week in the editing lab, constantly conducting interviews, etc). You end up spending almost 150 hours on the film, but it is so rewarding and it sparked an interest for me that I plan on pursuing/incorporating into my life no matter what my career choice may be.

Check out past films (including Waitlisted- my group's film!) at: http://activecitizen.tufts.edu/?pid=58&c=91

WOW thanks for the awesome info. Now I'm seriously considering making Tufts my top-choice school. I'd rather excell in a developing program than be just another face in the crowd at a place like UCLA or USC.

Thanks a lot...

TripMcnealy: Consider majoring in ILVS (International Letters and Visual Studies). It's a really well-rounded major with classes ranging from film to philosophy to art history to political science to literature. Personally, I think that if you want to be a cultured person AND filmmaker, this would be the ideal program for you.
