Hi all lucky NU peoples! I wasn't accepted this past spring so I'm already waiting for the application for a transfer - I'm across town for this 06-07 year at UChicago . . . but hopefully not for more than this year! :)

Anyhoo, I am wondering how popular the Film Program has been recently and whether anyone thinks there will be room for a Transfer for 07-08? I'm desperate to get into the Film Program because that's what I want to do in life, I know it! Something to do with Film! So anyone reckon I'll have any luck as a Transfer? My standing would be sophomore of course.

Thanks!

first of all, much as i'd like you to come to NU, don't go into UChicago with the mentality that you won't like it! you might just end up happy there :) and certainly don't tell people you meet there that you're thinking of transferring, b/c who would want to make good friends with someone who clearly isn't interested in staying at their school? lol. getting into the school of communications is (i believe) just as difficult as getting into Weinberg, possibly slightly easier.

Getting into the school of comm isn't harder than getting into any other NU school - it's getting into a particular major that's difficult. Theatre, for example, is very difficult to transfer into. However, I don't think it's as hard to transfer into the film major. Good luck. And listen to Lily's advice about UChicago. :)

As a NU Radio-TV-Film alum, with a S at UChicago who makes films,I can tell you that there is a wonderful organization at UChicago called FireEscape Films. You can learn technical skills and make your own movies, all while studying whatever else you're interested in. They have great equipment which you can sign out, editing rooms (even old fashioned movieola editing tables, a lost art) and equipment and many members willing to crew for you. Now, the NU Film school is incredible, but give Uof C a chance and definitely check out FireEscape.

Thanks for all your advice. I've been wondering whether there will be a difficulty with transfering into the film program because of the numbers game and whether it will be filled, as the website warns.

See, the problem is, I've wanted NU since I was in 8th grade. I've just loved everything I've ever heard about it and couldn't help but feel totally downtrodden when I got the rejection notice on the internet back in April. The film program seems to cover every aspect of film and for someone who hasn't had any experience with film whatsoever, except for being an avid fan of film and having a critical eye for the medium, I would appreciate a well-rounded curriculum where I can study the whole range of skills necessary.

I first knew I wanted to concentrate on going into film when I watched the Special Features of my Extended Edition of 'Fellowship of the Ring'. Just watching the behind-the-scenes and seeing the different aspects of the filmmaking process awed me. I was drawn in to the atmosphere and the creativity and the sense of accomplishment.

I applied to UChicago with a "why not?" attitude. I didn't expect to get in and I fully expected to be an NU freshman in September. But it didn't work out that way and I chose UChicago not for the school but for the city. I figured I'd have more opportunities to do stuff while in the city rather than cooped up in a suburb at a different school.

I have an optimistic view about UChicago, I'm expecting it be good fun no matter what. And I do have a single with a private bath for my first year! :) But, I have a feeling that the "intellectual" hooplah surrounding the school will drive me nuts me because I am really not that type to be interested in "Japanese Cinema Between 1930 and 1950"; I want to study "Beginning Film Editing" and take classes that will mean something and lead me towards a job, not the ability to answer Jeopardy questions! :) That is how I feel about UChicago's attitude about creative expression - they'll teach the history and the analysis, but they won't go near the technique nor the execution. They don't even have a theatre major either!

I am prepared to join FireEscape Films as an EC as well as volunteer for the Chicago Int. Film Festival and hopefully get a job at a local video rental store. I want to show NU how much I am devoted to learning film and I am ready to immerse myself in the curriculum. But I know UChicago will not be able to provide the best training nor the best internships possible; NU will give me more options.

Thanks though!! :)
