Is there a filmmaking scene at William & Mary? I don't know of any film classes on campus, but there is a Film Studies major. Are there any filmmaking groups or organizations for wannabe directors/screenwriters?

Is there a major you would recommend for W&M students who want to try their hand at being cinematic storytellers?

@KubricksGhost, have you looked at the catalog for film classes? <a href=“Course Descriptions - College of William & Mary - Acalog ACMS™”>Course Descriptions - College of William & Mary - Acalog ACMS™; There are some, but not many, and all appear to be theoretical. I think you want to have some technical skills when you leave college if you want to get your foot in the door in filmmaking.

My oldest d’s roommate graduated from W & M as a Film Studies major in 2005, and she has been rather steadily employed in the film industry ever since - but in low-paying positions, mostly in independent films. There hasn’t been much security, though her first few years out of school she did easily move from TV show to TV show as a production assistant. She’s committed to a career in film, but she isn’t close to being a cinematic storyteller almost 10 years out.

Few people think more highly of W & M than I do. It’s a great place to become a truly educated thinker, to explore creative options, and to meet people who will be important in your life and career. But film is an especially hard field in which to find your place. Connections are hugely important, as are the skills that can lead to your dream job. If you’re truly committed to directing, have you thought about studying cinematography or editing at a school with a highly-regarded department?

From your past posts, you seem to want a major that will offer you employment in other fields if filmmaking doesn’t work out (is that correct?). You might want to investigate business majors in film and television, in that case. Good luck!

Are there any in Virginia which might offer such experience? I’m also interested in GMU, VT, and JMU. Not VCU or UVA.
