Fin 300 vs. Fin 302

Ross has recently decided to not let any students outside of Ross take Fin 300(Financial Management). They have instead introduced a new introductory finance course for LSA students called "Making Financial Decisions." The description for the course seems very different, but I emailed the prof for the course next fall and she assured me the courses are basically the same and the course will use the same textbook.

I feel as if she is pulling my leg and Ross is shafting non Ross. The pros are, obviously, that more seats will be able for non ross to take the prereq for every other finance course.

Does anyone know any details about this new course?

Thanks in advance for your help.

My guess for the reason why you can’t take Fin 300 during fall semester is because it’s a required core course for BBA juniors - thus, all the seats would be filled. Alternatively, you could take it winter semester next year, and there would be plenty of open seats because you don’t have to take it with Ross students.

The same holds true for ACC 271. You can’t take it fall semester because it’s a core course for BBA sophomores. The other course they offer for ACC 271 isn’t taught by the same professor (which sucks, because Klemstine is a ****ing awesome professor for 271) and it’s called something else altogether. Pretty sure the content is a little different too.

Starting next Fall, according to Academic services and Admissions, non Ross students will not be allowed to take Fin 300 ever again unless further changes are made in the future. That is why they introduced 302, but If anyone on here knows about the content of the course compared to 300. Obviously, this person would prob have to be within Ross to find out, so it’s a long shot, but hopefully someone knows.

I think ACC 271 and 272 are now 300 and 301 but do you guys know if you have to take 300 first and then 301 or if you can reverse the order and it wouldn’t matter? I need to take those accounting prereqs to apply to the MAcc program at Ross and if I don’t get into the BBA program, I still need to find a way to take accounting courses.

You can reverse the order ACC 271 is an advisory pre-requisite for ACC 301. I wouldn’t recommend reversing the order though because the second semester builds on the first and you may be lost without the first class.

I would recommend strongly against taking 272 (301) before 271 (300). Although they are pretty different since 272 is cost accounting, and 271 is really just a blanket intro, it is expected that you understand the basics of accounting for 272. You need to know depreciation, various accounts, which accounts are contra assets/liabilities, and I’m sure there are countless other things that I’m missing because I’m simply not aware, since I took 271 before 272.

To repeat: don’t take 272 before 271 - it’ll serve no practical purpose because in order to take another accounting course like 312 (which most Ross students take after 272), you’ll need to have had a background from 271. So there really is no way getting around it, and you’d just be making 272 (which is already harder imo) that much more difficult.

OK thanks. I guess if I don’t get into the BBA program I’ll just have to e-mail a professor of 300 and hope that he or she will let me in if there is an open spot.
