I’ve been wanting to go to BU for awhile. I might apply ED here, but it depends on how nice they are with financial aid. I know if you apply ED somewhere you have to be sure you can afford it; but my parents much rather take out loans and then sell one of our houses after I graduate to pay it off.

My question is “If I apply ED to BU will I get screwed with Financial Aid?”

It sounds like you may not qualify for need-based aid if your parents have "houses." Those are assets that will factor into your EFC (Expected Family Contibution). In other words, you may find out that your family can afford to pay the full cost of college - even if you don't think that is true.

Even if you don't qualify for need-based aid, there are lots of ways to borrow money. You can borrow up to the full cost of your education in lots of different ways. The only catch is that the interest rates are much higher than you will want to pay.

Bottom line - need-based aid is based on need, not on wants.

From a parent who has been there. We say we need money for college, but found out that we don't after filling out the FAFSA and CSS.

BU calculates your aid based on formulas. When you're admitted - so I'm told - doesn't matter, though I've read here that how they rank you in your college as an admittee might. That is, one poster said she got more aid than her brother, checked and was told she was ranked higher in her college than he was as an admitted student in his. Don't know if that's true, but generally they use formulas. My family ended up being in the Federal Quality Assurance Review, which meant sending everything in all over again. It really is formulas.
