Fin. Aid for transfer at Univ. Michigan-Ann Arbor OR Univ. Wisconsin-Madison

I will be graduating from a community college with an AA next Spring, so I would be looking at transferring to UM-Ann Arbor or UW-Madison for Fall 2013.

Stats:
-3.875 College gpa
-Work at the college
-I volunteer at a food bank every Sunday, and have been for over 3 years.
-I will graduate as a honors scholar.
-Member of Phi Theta Kappa (International honor society for 2 year schools), Psi Beta (Psychology honor society), and Alpha Beta Gamma (Business Honor society).
-Will be a part of the living leadership program.
-Looking at giving tours on the campus to prospective students during Fall 2012.
-Also highly considering playing soccer for the college.

I am able to pay off school with my grant money, and scholarships from high school, my EFC is Zero. I already have the maximum Pell Grant amount. How much do you think I will get from UM-Ann Arbor? How much do you think I will get from UW-Madison? I am from Illinois, so I'm out of state for both.

At either school, you will not likely be awarded enough aid to attend. You need to look at your in-state schools.

Most public universities offer very little aid to out-of-state students; this goes double for transfers.

Contact the financial aid offices at both schools and ask. My recollection is that both Wisconsin and Michigan offer some need-based aid to out of state freshmen, but it’s not necessarily available to all students who need it. Have no idea what the policy is with regard to transfer students. The best way to find out is to ask the schools!

I ran the UW net price calculator and it spit out a $17,000 gap. There was some institutional need-based aid thrown in, but still completely unaffordable.

Sit down with the Transfer Counselor at your CC and get some help with your list. That person should have good ideas for you.

I strongly urge you to consider your in state schools, or try to find a school that offers Phi Theta Kappa scholarships to OOS students (it might bring costs to in state level). You can do a search for this online, and you can also talkl to the scholarship/finaid folks at your CC. They are probably on top of this sort of thing.
