Transfer - schools that would be matches for me?

I’m looking for schools that would be good fits
that I would have a chance getting in. Out of
state not a problem.

-lives in Michigan
-1st college GPA 2.25 with 6 credits that
transfer and 3 credits that don’t. Had adverse
personal circumstances and was not happy at
this university.
-2nd college - community college. 3.87 with 16 credits and continuing here.
-history major
-1st generation college student

So far, I’ve been focusing my search to New
Jersey, California, Florida, Texas, and Arizona. If I just transferred within the state of Michigan, I’m
looking at Wayne State, and U Michigan. No
MSU suggestions, that was the first college I
attended. I would prefer to leave the state
though.

So my question is, does anyone have any
suggestions what universities I might want to
look at? I want to go to a large state university preferably.

The usual advice in cases like yours is to complete a full two years at that community college, and then transfer after finishing your AA or AS degree. That will give you the best options. The Transfer Advisor at your CC also should have advice for you on creating your application list, so make an appointment with that person and get some more ideas.

How much will your parents pay each year? That answer will likely determine where you should apply.

OOS publics will not likely be affordable unless your parents will pay, and many privates don’t give great aid to transfer students. OOS publics don’t give much/any aid to OOS students. UVA and UNC do, but they’re hard to get into OOS.

Ask your parents how much they’ll pay.

It’s just my mom, and 30k and I have to pay living expenses(I have a job so that’s manageable).

What is $30k? the amount that your mom will pay each year or the amount that she earns?

How much do you earn from a job? it’s very difficult for a student to earn enough to pay for room and board during college, along with other day to day expenses.

What kind of “large state univs” do you like? Many of them have OOS tuitions of $25k-40k per year…and that’s not counting books, fees, room, board, or transportation.

My mom would take out student loans so the amount she would pay.

I make around 20k…I’m a bartender. But I could take out federal loans.

Well, colleges that I’ve been looking are Univ of Florida, Florida State, Univ South Florida, univ of central Florida, Rutgers, Michigan(in state), Texas, Texas a&m, etc. I’m just not sure if I would get in because I started off college rough due to some personal circumstances.

You went to MSU!!

I really didn’t like MSU that much. I really hate East Lansing. I wish I would went to a different college.

Why didn’t you like about MSU?

I just felt like they were really disorganized and gave everybody the run around about everything. The advising was pretty terrible and so was the financial aid office. I just in general don’t like the East Lansing/Lansing area. I want something I guess different and more lively…in another state.

The atmosphere too was just iffy. I just wasn’t happy.

Look at Mich State and other in-state schools.

OP went to MSU and hated it @SOSConcern

Oh I was thinking Univ of MI. My bad…In MI is another public like Central MI Univ, Eastern MI Univ, or other publics? Is U of MI in Ann Arbor out of academic reach? What about U of MI - Dearborn? Have you visited and considered the other in-state options? Maybe you have relative/friend in a location where you would have lower room/board expenses.

Have you decided what didn’t work at you (beside the personal circumstance) that would work at another large university elsewhere? And what makes you think it will be much different at another large school as far as the specific problems you confronted at MSU?

What do you want to study? How heavily do you need advising, and have you evaluated this at other schools? Many schools have degree plan/courses on-line (like ‘finish in 4’) - my kids at their colleges have an advisor ‘sign off’ on their courses, but they figure a lot out themselves and ask others in addition to advising.

It sounds like you are willing/able to work and help with some of the college costs.

The only other colleges I like in Michigan are UM and Wayne. I mainly would not go back to MSU because it gives me bad memories of the personal circumstances. I’m a history major. I have visited other universities in Michigan and prefer only UM or Wayne, or I’d just as wells go back to Michigan State. There’s a big step down from Michigan State to Eastern, Central, etc and I’m into the big ten football and SEC so that means a lot to me.

As far as University of Michigan - I’m not sure if it will be a reach or not. The GPA from Michigan State is pretty bad, and not sure if they’d look past it, or not.

MSU though would I guess be easiest to apply for readmission because I still live in the area.

Is the 2.25 gpa from college #1 only counting transferable credits or all credits?
Your gpa at you CC is good but you need more credits.
You’re at 22 credits so you still have a ways to go until you get your AA/AS. Why not wait a year and see what your gpa is like and then re-ask the question.

@History2Law that’s what I’m going to do. I’m not in good enough place to be transferring as of right now.

2.25 consists of 3 credits=3.5 3 credits =4.0 and 2 0.0 and 3 credit =1.5 which was a retake of one of the 0.0s.
